About Masechta Yoma · מסכת יומא

Yoma - the masechta of 'the Day', Yom Kippur - follows the Kohen Gadol through the avodah of Yom Kippur in the Beis HaMikdash. It opens seven days before, when the Kohen Gadol is separated from his home and prepared for the day, and learns why, and how another kohen was readied in case he could not serve.

The next perakim describe the morning: the lots the kohanim drew for each service, the call to see whether the time had come, the five immersions and ten washings of the Kohen Gadol, his gold and white garments, and the confessions he said over his bull for himself, his house and the kohanim, and over the goat for all Israel. They learn the lots over the two goats - one for Hashem and one for Azazel - the ketores brought into the Kodesh HaKodashim, the sprinkling of the blood, the even shesiyah, and the goat sent to Azazel, and the Kohen Gadol's reading from the Torah.

The eighth perek, Yom HaKippurim, is the halacha for every Jew: the five afflictions - eating and drinking, washing, anointing, shoes and marital life - the amounts that make one liable, the sick person and the pregnant woman who must eat, pikuach nefesh that pushes aside Shabbos and Yom Kippur, and teshuvah: Yom Kippur atones for sins between a person and Hashem, but sins between a person and his friend only once he has made peace with him. Its Mishnah closes with Rabbi Akiva's words: 'Fortunate are you, Israel - before Whom do you purify yourselves, and Who purifies you? Your Father in heaven.'

From the pages of Yoma

The first Beis HaMikdash was destroyed for idolatry, immorality and bloodshed; the second, in whose days there was Torah, mitzvos and kindness, for baseless hatred - which weighs as much as all three. Hillel, who paid half his day's wage to the guard of the beis midrash, and on a day he had nothing climbed to the skylight in the snow to hear Torah from Shemayah and Avtalyon, who broke Shabbos to warm him; a talmid chacham whose inside is not like his outside is no talmid chacham; and so great is teshuvah that when a person returns out of love, his wilful sins become like merits.

This page holds 994 shiurim on Masechta Yoma from 11 maggidei shiur; the most come from Dirshu (539), Rabbi Eli Stefansky (136) and Rabbi David Elmaleh (77). 481 of them learn the whole daf and 513 are short reviews. 87 dafim have their own shiurim here, each in its own row above, and “Learn in the Daf Room” opens that daf with its text and its shiurim side by side.

Masechta Yoma in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle learned Masechta Yoma one daf a day for 87 days, from daf 2 to daf 88, from April 13, 2021 to July 8, 2021; the 15th cycle, which opens with Berachos on June 8, 2027, reaches it on September 14, 2028. Masechta Yoma is in Seder Moed, the second of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Shekalim and before Masechta Sukkah. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
