About Masechta Sukkah · מסכת סוכה

Sukkah learns the two mitzvos of Sukkos - the sukkah and the four minim - and the joy of the Beis HaMikdash in those days.

The first perek learns the sukkah itself: a sukkah higher than twenty amos, the smallest sukkah, how many walls it needs and how a wall can be made, s'chach that grew from the ground and is no longer attached to it, and a sukkah under a tree or under another sukkah. The second perek, HaYashen, learns who sits in the sukkah and when - eating and sleeping there, a traveller, the sick and those caring for them - and the rain that sends a person indoors, 'like a servant who came to pour a cup for his master, and his master poured the pitcher in his face'.

The third and fourth perakim learn the lulav, esrog, hadassim and aravos: a stolen or dried lulav, the beauty an esrog needs, how many days each is taken and why Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai extended the lulav to all seven days everywhere after the Churban, the shaking of the lulav, and the aravah of Hoshana Rabbah. The fifth perek, HaChalil, is Simchas Beis HaSho'eivah: 'whoever did not see the joy of the water-drawing never saw joy in his life' - the great lamps in the Ezras Nashim, the chassidim and men of deeds dancing with torches, and the Levi'im with their instruments on the fifteen steps. Sukkah also teaches that the yetzer hara looks to the righteous like a mountain and to the wicked like a hair.

From the pages of Sukkah

The Shechinah never came down below ten handbreadths - one reason a sukkah must be at least ten handbreadths high; one busy with a mitzvah is free from another mitzvah, so those on the road for a mitzvah are free from the sukkah; Hillel at the water-drawing, who said 'if I am here, all is here'; and Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel, who danced before the people juggling eight burning torches. And the yetzer hara has seven names: Hashem called it evil, Moshe uncircumcised, Dovid impure, Shlomo the enemy, Yeshayahu the stumbling block, Yechezkel stone and Yoel the hidden one.

This page holds 174 shiurim on Masechta Sukkah from 5 maggidei shiur; the most come from Dirshu (56), Rabbi Oster Gemara Shiur (55) and Rabbi Yosef Gavriel Bechhofer (34). 121 of them learn the whole daf and 53 are short reviews. 55 dafim have their own shiurim here, each in its own row above, and “Learn in the Daf Room” opens that daf with its text and its shiurim side by side.

Masechta Sukkah in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle learned Masechta Sukkah one daf a day for 55 days, from daf 2 to daf 56, from July 9, 2021 to September 1, 2021; the 15th cycle, which opens with Berachos on June 8, 2027, reaches it on December 10, 2028. Masechta Sukkah is in Seder Moed, the second of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Yoma and before Masechta Beitzah. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
