About Masechta Shekalim · מסכת שקלים

Shekalim is the one masechta of the daf yomi cycle learned from the Talmud Yerushalmi, because the Bavli has no Gemara on it; the Vilna Shas prints it with 22 dafim and the Mishnah has eight perakim. Its subject is the machatzis hashekel, the half-shekel every Jew gave each year for the korbanos of the whole people.

It opens on the first of Adar, when the announcement went out about the shekalim and about kilayim in the fields, and learns who must give, how the money changers sat in every town on the fifteenth of Adar and in the Beis HaMikdash from the twenty-fifth, and the kalbon, the small coin added to the half-shekel. It then follows the money: how the shekalim were taken out of the chamber three times a year, how they bought the korbanos of the community, and what was done with what was left over.

The later perakim describe the Beis HaMikdash at work: the officers in charge of each task - the gates, the lots, the song, the bird offerings - the thirteen shofar-shaped boxes for gifts, the chamber of secret gifts from which the poor of good families were supported quietly, and the laws of coins and meat found in Yerushalayim. It is a masechta that lets the learner walk through the Beis HaMikdash, its people and its treasury.

This page holds 269 shiurim on Masechta Shekalim from 5 maggidei shiur; the most come from Dirshu (217), Rabbi Eli Stefansky (21) and Rabbi David Elmaleh (17). 178 of them learn the whole daf and 91 are short reviews. 21 dafim have their own shiurim here, each in its own row above, and “Learn in the Daf Room” opens that daf with its text and its shiurim side by side.

Masechta Shekalim in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle learned Masechta Shekalim one daf a day for 21 days, from daf 2 to daf 22, from March 23, 2021 to April 12, 2021; the 15th cycle, which opens with Berachos on June 8, 2027, reaches it on August 24, 2028. Masechta Shekalim is in Seder Moed, the second of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Pesachim and before Masechta Yoma. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
