About Masechta Shabbos · מסכת שבת

Shabbos is one of the longest masechtos of the Shas - 157 dafim and twenty-four perakim on the day Klal Yisrael keeps every week. It opens with carrying, the ways an object leaves one domain for another, and the four domains: reshus harabim, reshus hayachid, karmelis and makom petur.

The second perek, Bameh Madlikin, which many say on Friday night, learns which wicks and oils may be used for the Shabbos lights, and with it the lights of Chanukah: the jar of oil, and the dispute of Beis Shammai and Beis Hillel on how the lights are added night by night. The next perakim learn food left on the fire before Shabbos and food kept warm, what an animal and a woman may go out wearing, and then the seventh perek, Klal Gadol, the root of the whole masechta: the thirty-nine melachos, the kinds of work that built the Mishkan, from plowing and planting to writing, building and carrying out.

The perakim after it learn the amounts that make a person liable, the melachos one by one - building, writing, tying knots - muktzeh, healing on Shabbos and bris milah on Shabbos. Along the way Shabbos carries some of the best-known aggados of the Talmud: Hillel and the convert who asked to learn the whole Torah on one foot, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and his son in the cave, and Klal Yisrael at Har Sinai saying na'aseh before nishma.

From the pages of Shabbos

Shabbos is 'a good gift I have in My treasury', as Hashem told Moshe; Rabbi Chanina would wrap himself in his best clothes as Shabbos came in and say 'come, let us go out to greet Shabbos the queen'; two angels walk a person home from shul on Friday night, and when they find the lights lit, the table set and the bed made, the good angel says 'so may it be next Shabbos'; Yosef who honoured Shabbos bought a fish for Shabbos and found a precious stone inside it; and Hillel's answer to the convert - 'what is hateful to you, do not do to your friend: that is the whole Torah, and the rest is its explanation - go and learn'.

This page holds 2,414 shiurim on Masechta Shabbos from 12 maggidei shiur; the most come from Dirshu (1,500), Rabbi Shmuel Neiman (281) and Rabbi Eli Stefansky (221). 986 of them learn the whole daf and 1,428 are short reviews, and 281 are in Hebrew. 156 dafim have their own shiurim here, each in its own row above, and “Learn in the Daf Room” opens that daf with its text and its shiurim side by side.

Masechta Shabbos in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle learned Masechta Shabbos one daf a day for 156 days, from daf 2 to daf 157, from March 8, 2020 to August 10, 2020; the 15th cycle, which opens with Berachos on June 8, 2027, reaches it on August 10, 2027. Masechta Shabbos is in Seder Moed, the second of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Berachos and before Masechta Eruvin. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
