About Masechta Bava Basra · מסכת בבא בתרא

Bava Basra - the last gate - is the longest masechta of the Shas by dafim: 176 dafim on neighbours, property, sales and inheritance.

It opens with partners who wish to divide a courtyard and must build a wall between them, and learns the damage of seeing into a neighbour's space and what neighbours owe each other: distances from a wall, a window, a well and a tree, and a shop that disturbs those who live above it. The third perek, Chezkas HaBatim, learns chazakah - how three years of use without protest prove ownership. The next perakim learn what is included in a sale: a house, a courtyard, a ship, a wagon, produce and a field, and the quality a seller must give.

The eighth and ninth perakim learn yerushah: the order of inheritance, the daughters of Tzelofchad, the double portion of the firstborn, and the gifts of a person on his deathbed. The last perek learns shtaros - how a document is written and signed - a guarantor, and loans. Along the way Bava Basra brings the tzedakah of King Munbaz, the journeys of Rabbah bar bar Chanah, the order of the books of Tanach and who wrote each, and Yehoshua ben Gamla, who set up teachers for children in every town.

From the pages of Bava Basra

Jealousy among scholars increases wisdom; since the day the Beis HaMikdash was destroyed, prophecy was taken from the prophets and given to the wise; tzedakah is equal to all the mitzvos; and the perushim who would eat no meat and drink no wine after the Churban, and Rabbi Yehoshua, who showed them that a whole people cannot be asked to mourn beyond its strength. And when Turnus Rufus asked Rabbi Akiva why, if his G-d loves the poor, He does not feed them Himself, Rabbi Akiva answered: so that through them we are saved.
