About Masechta Arachin · מסכת ערכין

Arachin learns the vows by which a person pledges to the Beis HaMikdash his own 'value' or another's - the erech the Torah sets by age, from fifty shekalim down to three - and the laws of hekdesh: what happens when a person sanctifies his field, his house or his things.

It opens 'all may value and be valued' and learns who may vow and whose value is set, and the difference between an erech, a fixed sum, and a vow of someone's worth, his price in the market. The fourth perek learns the poor man who pays only what he can, and the next perakim how a pledge is collected and what is left to the one who owes it, and the field of a family's inheritance, redeemed by the years left until yovel.

The last perek learns the house in a walled city, redeemed only within a year, and the cities of the levi'im, with the laws of yovel and shemittah. Arachin also holds the Gemara's long teaching on lashon hara: the ten trials of our fathers in the desert, the spies whose report cost a generation, and that lashon hara kills three - the one who speaks, the one who listens and the one spoken about.

From the pages of Arachin

Lashon hara is so heavy that the Torah gave it a punishment of its own, tzara'as, and the Gemara asks what the cure is for one who speaks it: if he is a talmid chacham, let him busy himself with Torah; if he is not, let him make himself humble. The Gemara counts the ten times our fathers tested Hashem in the desert; it teaches that one who rebukes his friend must know how to rebuke, and Rabbi Tarfon wondered whether anyone in his generation could still accept rebuke; and from the yovel it learns that the land and its people belong to Hashem - 'for the land is Mine, for you are strangers and residents with Me'. And a person should not give away everything he owns, even to the Beis HaMikdash - all the more so he should not leave himself with nothing for the sake of others.

This page holds 78 shiurim on Masechta Arachin from 4 maggidei shiur; the most come from Rabbi Eli Stefansky (52), Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss (24) and The Motivation Congregation (1). 28 of them learn the whole daf and 50 are short reviews. 31 dafim have their own shiurim here, each in its own row above, and “Learn in the Daf Room” opens that daf with its text and its shiurim side by side.

Masechta Arachin in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle reaches Masechta Arachin on November 19, 2026 and learns it one daf a day for 33 days, from daf 2 to daf 34, finishing on December 21, 2026. Masechta Arachin is in Seder Kodashim, the fifth of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Bechoros and before Masechta Temurah. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
