About Masechta Megillah · מסכת מגילה

Megillah learns Purim and the reading of the Megillah, and then the reading of the Torah in shul and the holiness of a shul and its sefarim.

Its first perek opens with the days on which the Megillah is read - the fourteenth of Adar in open towns, the fifteenth in cities walled from the days of Yehoshua bin Nun, and earlier in the villages - and moves on to Adar I and Adar II and a list of halachos that differ between pairs of days and things. Here the Gemara reads Megillas Esther verse by verse: Achashverosh's feast, Mordechai who would not bow, Esther's prayer, and the hidden hand of Hashem behind it all. The second perek learns how the Megillah must be read - in order, from a scroll written properly, by whom and when in the day - and the mitzvos of the day: mishloach manos, matanos la'evyonim and the seudah.

The last two perakim learn the holiness of a shul and of sefarim - what may be sold to buy what - and the reading of the Torah: how many are called up on each day, the haftaros of the festivals, the four parshiyos before Pesach, and the targum read aloud in the days of the Gemara. Megillah also tells of the seventy-two elders whom King Talmai placed in separate rooms, and each wrote the Torah in Greek with the very same changes.

From the pages of Megillah

Wherever you find the greatness of Hashem, there you find His humility; one who repeats a saying in the name of the one who said it brings redemption to the world, as Esther told the king in Mordechai's name; the Megillah is read at night and read again by day; and the masechta ends with Moshe Rabbeinu, who set for Israel to ask and expound the laws of each festival in its time.

This page holds 230 shiurim on Masechta Megillah from 8 maggidei shiur; the most come from Rabbi Shmuel Silber (80), Rabbi Eli Stefansky (36) and Dirshu (31). 171 of them learn the whole daf and 59 are short reviews. 31 dafim have their own shiurim here, each in its own row above, and “Learn in the Daf Room” opens that daf with its text and its shiurim side by side.

Masechta Megillah in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle learned Masechta Megillah one daf a day for 31 days, from daf 2 to daf 32, from December 14, 2021 to January 13, 2022; the 15th cycle, which opens with Berachos on June 8, 2027, reaches it on May 17, 2029. Masechta Megillah is in Seder Moed, the second of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Taanis and before Masechta Moed Katan. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
