About Masechta Nazir · מסכת נזיר

Nazir learns the nazir - the man or woman who takes on, for at least thirty days, not to drink wine or eat anything from the vine, not to cut his hair, and not to become tamei to the dead - and how the nazirus ends with korbanos and the shaving of his hair in the Beis HaMikdash.

Like Nedarim it opens with the words that make a person a nazir, even part of the words, and goes on to a nazir for a set number of days, a lifelong nazir and a nazir like Shimshon, and a nazirus that never takes effect. The middle perakim learn the three things forbidden to a nazir - the grape, the razor and the dead - the amounts that make him liable, and what he must do when he becomes tamei in the middle of his days: shave, bring korbanos and begin again.

The masechta learns the nazirus of a woman and of a slave, a father who makes his son a nazir, and ends with Shmuel HaNavi, of whom it was said 'a razor shall not come upon his head'. The Gemara asks whether a nazir is a sinner for denying himself wine or holy for holding back from it, and tells of Shimon HaTzaddik, who ate from the korban of a nazir only once - from a young shepherd who saw his face in the water and vowed to cut his beautiful hair for Heaven.

From the pages of Nazir

A person should always busy himself with Torah and mitzvos even not for their own sake, for from not-for-its-sake he comes to for-its-sake; a sin done for the sake of Heaven can be greater than a mitzvah done not for its sake; two men who roasted their korbanos Pesach - one ate it for the mitzvah and one ate it for his hunger - and the verse says 'the righteous walk in them, and sinners stumble in them'; a nazir who became tamei loses the days he already kept, as the Torah says 'the first days shall fall away'; and Nazir closes, like Berachos, with the words that talmidei chachamim increase peace in the world.

This page holds 358 shiurim on Masechta Nazir from 7 maggidei shiur; the most come from Rabbi Shmuel Silber (94), Rabbi David Elmaleh (67) and Rabbi Eli Stefansky (65). 241 of them learn the whole daf and 117 are short reviews. 65 dafim have their own shiurim here, each in its own row above, and “Learn in the Daf Room” opens that daf with its text and its shiurim side by side.

Masechta Nazir in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle learned Masechta Nazir one daf a day for 65 days, from daf 2 to daf 66, from January 25, 2023 to March 30, 2023; the 15th cycle, which opens with Berachos on June 8, 2027, reaches it on June 28, 2030. Masechta Nazir is in Seder Nashim, the third of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Nedarim and before Masechta Sotah. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
