About Masechta Pesachim · מסכת פסחים

Pesachim learns two things: the chometz of Pesach and the korban Pesach. It opens 'Ohr l'arba'ah asar' - on the night of the fourteenth of Nisan the chometz is searched for by the light of a candle - and its first perakim learn bedikas chometz and bitul, the hour after which chometz may not be eaten or owned, which foods are chometz and which mixtures, and how matzah is made so that it does not become chometz.

The fifth perek, Tamid Nishchat, turns to the Beis HaMikdash on Erev Pesach: the korban Pesach shechted in three groups while the Levi'im sang Hallel, and a Pesach that falls on Shabbos. The middle perakim learn who may eat from the korban, how it is roasted, and the person who was tamei or far away and brings Pesach Sheni a month later.

The tenth and last perek, Arvei Pesachim, is the Seder night itself: the four cups, matzah and maror, the questions, beginning with disgrace and ending with praise, and the Hallel - the source of the Haggadah every Jewish home reads. Here stand Rabban Gamliel's words, 'whoever did not say these three things on Pesach - Pesach, matzah and maror - did not fulfil his obligation', and Hillel, who wrapped the matzah and maror together and ate them as one.

From the pages of Pesachim

The ten things created on Erev Shabbos at twilight, among them the well, the man, the rainbow and the luchos; the seven things hidden from people, among them the day of a person's death and the day of comfort; Yaakov Avinu, who wished to reveal the end of days to his sons, and when the Shechinah left him they answered 'Shema Yisrael, Hashem is our G-d, Hashem is One', and he said 'Baruch shem kevod malchuso l'olam va'ed' - which is why we say it quietly; that those on a mitzvah's errand come to no harm; and the son of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi, who came back from a vision and said 'I saw an upside-down world, those above below and those below above' - and his father answered, 'my son, you saw a clear world'. Here too: one who says 'this coin is for tzedakah so that my son will live' is a complete tzaddik; and Rabbi Akiva's counsel, 'make your Shabbos like a weekday rather than need other people'.

Masechta Pesachim in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle learned Masechta Pesachim one daf a day for 120 days, from daf 2 to daf 121, from November 23, 2020 to March 22, 2021; the 15th cycle, which opens with Berachos on June 8, 2027, reaches it on April 26, 2028. Masechta Pesachim is in Seder Moed, the second of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Eruvin and before Masechta Shekalim. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
