About Masechta Horayos · מסכת הוריות

Horayos learns a mistaken ruling: when the Great Sanhedrin rules wrongly that something forbidden is permitted and the people follow it, or when the kohen gadol or the king sins by mistake - and the korban each one brings.

Its first perek learns when the beis din, and not each person, carries the sin: they must have ruled to uproot part of a mitzvah and not all of it, and the people must have acted on their word; and it learns the individual who knew the ruling was wrong and followed it anyway. The second perek learns the kohen gadol anointed with the shemen hamishchah and the nasi, the king, each with his own korban when he sins by mistake.

The third perek learns who comes first - a man before a woman to be saved, a kohen before a levi and a levi before a Yisrael - but a mamzer who is a talmid chacham comes before a kohen gadol who is an am ha'aretz. It ends with the question of who is greater, Sinai - one who knows much - or one who uproots mountains with sharp reasoning, and the answer that Sinai comes first, because all need the owner of the wheat.

From the pages of Horayos

Fortunate is the generation whose leader brings a korban for his mistake; a person should always busy himself with Torah and mitzvos even not for their own sake; and the Gemara's list of things that make a person forget his learning and the things that bring it back. It also sets the honour of the beis midrash: when the Nasi comes in, everyone stands until he says 'sit'; when the Av Beis Din comes in, a row stands on each side until he sits down. Its last Mishnah sets who comes first: a kohen before a levi and a levi before a yisrael - but a mamzer who is a talmid chacham comes before a kohen gadol who is an am ha'aretz.

Masechta Horayos in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle learned Masechta Horayos one daf a day for 13 days, from daf 2 to daf 14, from September 3, 2025 to September 15, 2025; the 15th cycle, which opens with Berachos on June 8, 2027, reaches it on February 4, 2033. Masechta Horayos is in Seder Nezikin, the fourth of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Avodah Zarah and before Masechta Zevachim. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
