Bava Metzia - the middle gate - learns how people deal with each other's property: what is found, what is guarded, what is sold, lent and hired. It opens with two people holding a tallis, each saying 'I found it', and learns oaths and claims.
The second perek, Eilu Metzios, learns lost objects: what belongs to the finder and what must be announced, the signs by which an owner proves his loss, and the mitzvah of returning it and of helping a friend load and unload his animal. The third learns the one who guards a deposit. The fourth, HaZahav, learns buying and selling: when a sale is complete, the curse on one who backs out of his word, overcharging by a sixth, and ona'as devarim, hurting a person with words - one who shames his friend in public is as if he shed blood.
The fifth perek, Eizehu Neshech, learns ribbis, interest, in every form, and the later perakim learn hiring workers and their rights, paying a worker on his day, renting fields and houses, borrowing, and a house and upper floor that fall between two owners. In Bava Metzia stands the oven of Achnai, when a voice from heaven sided with Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua answered: 'the Torah is not in heaven'.

One who shames his friend in public has no share in the World to Come; a person should always be careful with the honour of his wife, for blessing is found in his home only because of her; the Torah warns about the stranger in thirty-six places; and Rabbi Zeira, who fasted a hundred fasts to forget the way of learning of Bavel before he went up to learn in Eretz Yisrael. Here too is the oven of Achnai: a voice from Heaven agreed with Rabbi Eliezer, and Rabbi Yehoshua stood and said 'it is not in heaven', and Hashem smiled and said 'My children have defeated Me'.

Masechta Bava Metzia in the Daf Yomi
The 14th Daf Yomi cycle learned Masechta Bava Metzia one daf a day for 118 days, from daf 2 to daf 119, from March 1, 2024 to June 26, 2024; the 15th cycle, which opens with Berachos on June 8, 2027, reaches it on August 3, 2031. Masechta Bava Metzia is in Seder Nezikin, the fourth of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Bava Kamma and before Masechta Bava Basra.
