About Masechta Eruvin · מסכת עירובין

Eruvin learns how the Chachamim let a Jew carry and walk on Shabbos within the bounds of the Torah, and the different kinds of eruv that make it possible.

The first perek, Mavui, learns the alleyway that opens onto a public street and how a lechi, a side post, or a korah, a crossbeam, closes it; the second learns the pasin, the boards set around a well in the field. Eruvei chatzeros - the shared food that turns many houses around one courtyard into one home so the neighbours may carry between them - and shitufei mevo'os for a whole alleyway are learned in the later perakim, with a roof, a wall or a ditch between two courtyards.

The middle perakim learn the eruv of techumin: a Jew may walk two thousand amos beyond his town on Shabbos, and the Gemara learns how that is measured, how a town is 'squared', what happens to a person who was taken out of the techum, and how one may set his Shabbos place elsewhere by putting food there before Shabbos. Eruvin also holds some of the most loved sayings of the Gemara: that after three years of dispute a voice from heaven said of Beis Shammai and Beis Hillel 'these and these are the words of the living G-d, and the halacha follows Beis Hillel' - because they were gentle and humble and taught Beis Shammai's words before their own; Rav Preida, who taught a student four hundred times; and that Torah stays with one who makes himself like a wilderness that all may walk upon.

From the pages of Eruvin

King Shlomo made the takanah of eruvin and of washing the hands, and a voice from heaven said of him 'my son, if your heart is wise, My heart too will rejoice'; Beis Shammai and Beis Hillel spent two and a half years on whether it would have been better for man not to be created, and concluded - better not, but now that he was created, let him examine his deeds; a person is known by three things, his cup, his pocket and his anger; had the Torah not been given, we could have learned modesty from the cat and honesty from the ant; and the words of Torah are like a fig tree - the more one searches it, the more figs he finds.

This page holds 1,232 shiurim on Masechta Eruvin from 10 maggidei shiur; the most come from Dirshu (809), Rabbi Eli Stefansky (147) and Rabbi Yosef Gavriel Bechhofer (109). 485 of them learn the whole daf and 747 are short reviews. 104 dafim have their own shiurim here, each in its own row above, and “Learn in the Daf Room” opens that daf with its text and its shiurim side by side.

Masechta Eruvin in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle learned Masechta Eruvin one daf a day for 104 days, from daf 2 to daf 105, from August 11, 2020 to November 22, 2020; the 15th cycle, which opens with Berachos on June 8, 2027, reaches it on January 13, 2028. Masechta Eruvin is in Seder Moed, the second of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Shabbos and before Masechta Pesachim. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
