About Masechta Nedarim · מסכת נדרים

Nedarim learns vows - the words by which a person forbids something to himself or to another - and how a vow can be undone. It opens with kinuyim and yados: words that only resemble a vow, or only part of one, and still bind.

The next perakim learn the vows that do not take effect - vows of exaggeration, vows made in error, vows made under force - and vows said to bargain or to urge. The middle perakim learn a vow that forbids a person benefit from his friend: what the friend may still do for him, such as paying his debts and teaching him midrash, halachos and aggados, and partners in a shared courtyard; and how 'I will not eat cooked food', 'vegetables' or 'wine' is read - by the way people speak, not by the dictionary.

The last perakim learn hataras nedarim, the release of a vow by a chacham through a regret the vow-maker did not foresee, and hafaras nedarim: a father's annulment of his young daughter's vows and a husband's of his wife's, on the day he hears them. Nedarim teaches how heavy the spoken word is - one who vows is as if he built a private altar - and tells how Kalba Savua vowed to disinherit his daughter Rachel when she married Rabbi Akiva, and released his vow when Rabbi Akiva returned a great sage.

From the pages of Nedarim

Why do talmidei chachamim not always have sons who are talmidei chachamim? Because they did not first make the bracha on the Torah; one who visits the sick takes away a sixtieth of his illness; and Rabbi Akiva, who swept and washed the floor for his sick student until he recovered, and said 'one who does not visit the sick is as if he shed blood'. A person is poor only in understanding - one who has it has everything; and Moshe Rabbeinu grew rich from the chips of the sapphire of the second luchos.

This page holds 717 shiurim on Masechta Nedarim from 9 maggidei shiur; the most come from Rabbi Daniel Glatstein (208), Rabbi Shmuel Silber (138) and Rabbi Oster Gemara Shiur (91). 456 of them learn the whole daf and 261 are short reviews. 90 dafim have their own shiurim here, each in its own row above, and “Learn in the Daf Room” opens that daf with its text and its shiurim side by side.

Masechta Nedarim in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle learned Masechta Nedarim one daf a day for 90 days, from daf 2 to daf 91, from October 27, 2022 to January 24, 2023; the 15th cycle, which opens with Berachos on June 8, 2027, reaches it on March 30, 2030. Masechta Nedarim is in Seder Nashim, the third of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Kesubos and before Masechta Nazir. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
