About Masechta Temurah · מסכת תמורה

Temurah learns the mitzvah 'he shall not exchange it': a person who tries to move the holiness of a korban onto another animal does not move it - both animals are holy - and he is given lashes.

The first perek learns who can make a temurah - an individual, not the community or partners - and the Gemara brings here the broad questions of a lav with no action, and whether a thing the Torah forbade takes effect once it is done. The next perakim learn the differences between korbanos of the individual and of the community, the young of korbanos, and the five chata'os left to die. The later perakim learn the ways a person may arrange that a firstborn not become holy, what may never be brought on the mizbe'ach - among them the pay of a harlot and the price of a dog - and which holy things are buried and which are burned.

In the Gemara stands the account of the halachos forgotten in the days of mourning for Moshe Rabbeinu, and how Osniel ben Kenaz brought them back with his reasoning.

From the pages of Temurah

All may make a temurah, men and women alike - not that a person may, but if he did, it stands. Words that are written may not be said by heart, and words said by heart may not be written; yet Rabbi Yochanan and Reish Lakish read from a book of aggadah, for 'it is a time to act for Hashem': better that a part of the Torah be set aside than that the Torah be forgotten from Israel. In the days of mourning for Moshe Rabbeinu three thousand halachos were forgotten, and when the people asked Yehoshua to ask Heaven for them, he answered 'it is not in heaven'. And Kalev, who promised his daughter Achsah to the one who would take Kiryas Sefer, gave her to Osniel ben Kenaz.

This page holds 51 shiurim on Masechta Temurah from 2 maggidei shiur; the most come from Rabbi Eli Stefansky (50) and Rabbi Daniel Glatstein (1). 27 of them learn the whole daf and 24 are short reviews. 30 dafim have their own shiurim here, each in its own row above, and “Learn in the Daf Room” opens that daf with its text and its shiurim side by side.

Masechta Temurah in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle reaches Masechta Temurah on December 22, 2026 and learns it one daf a day for 33 days, from daf 2 to daf 34, finishing on January 23, 2027. Masechta Temurah is in Seder Kodashim, the fifth of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Arachin and before Masechta Kerisos. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
