About Masechta Bava Kamma · מסכת בבא קמא

Bava Kamma - the first of the three gates of Nezikin - learns damages: what a person must pay when his property, or he himself, causes harm. It opens with the four avos nezikin - the ox, the pit, the grazing animal and the fire - and the duty to guard each.

The first perakim learn the ox that gores and the ox that has gored three times and is mu'ad, the tooth and foot of an animal that eats and tramples in another's field, the pit dug in the public road, the jar that broke on the road, and the fire that spreads. The eighth perek, HaChovel, learns a person who injures another: the five payments - damage, pain, healing, lost time and shame - and that 'an eye for an eye' means money.

The seventh and ninth perakim learn theft: the thief who pays double, or four and five for an ox or sheep he slaughtered or sold, the robber who must return what he took, and a stolen thing that changed in his hands; the tenth learns buying from a thief and saving one's own property. Through it all runs the question of how far a person answers for the world around him, and the teaching that one who wishes to be a chassid should keep the words of Nezikin.

From the pages of Bava Kamma

One who wishes to be a chassid should keep the words of Nezikin - some say the words of Avos, some say the words of Berachos; once permission is given to the destroyer, it does not tell the righteous from the wicked; one who prays for his friend when he needs the same thing himself is answered first; a person should always be among the pursued and not among the pursuers; whoever says that Hashem lets things pass, his own life will be let pass; and the ten takanos of Ezra.
