About Masechta Chullin · מסכת חולין

Chullin learns the food a Jew eats every day: shechitah, treifos, meat and milk, and other mitzvos of the kitchen and the field. It opens 'all may shecht' and learns who may shecht, with what knife and how - the five things that make a shechitah pasul - and how much of the simanim must be cut.

The third perek, Eilu Treifos, learns the eighteen kinds of treifah, an animal with a fatal wound or defect, and the signs of kosher animals, birds, fish and locusts. Then come the animal that dies giving birth, oso v'es b'no - not shechting a mother and its young on the same day - kisui hadam, covering the blood of a bird or a wild animal, and gid hanasheh, the sinew of the thigh. The eighth perek, Kol HaBasar, learns meat and milk: which meat is included, chicken and cheese, waiting between meat and milk, and the taste a mixture carries.

The last perakim learn the parts of the animal given to the kohen - the foreleg, the cheeks and the stomach - the first of the shearing, and shiluach haken, sending away the mother bird, with the promise of long life it carries.

From the pages of Chullin

The world stands only in the merit of Moshe and Aharon, who said 'and what are we?'; the moon asked how two kings could share one crown, and Hashem told it 'go and make yourself small' - and the korban of Rosh Chodesh atones for it; and the donkey of Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair, which would not eat grain that had not been tithed - for if Hashem does not let a stumbling block come through the animals of the righteous, how much more so through the righteous themselves. A person should always eat and drink less than his means, dress according to his means, and honour his wife and children more than his means.

This page holds 709 shiurim on Masechta Chullin from 8 maggidei shiur; the most come from Rabbi Eli Stefansky (440), Rabbi Oster Gemara Shiur (94) and Rabbi David Elmaleh (81). 444 of them learn the whole daf and 265 are short reviews, and 11 are in Hebrew. 141 dafim have their own shiurim here, each in its own row above, and “Learn in the Daf Room” opens that daf with its text and its shiurim side by side.

Masechta Chullin in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle learned Masechta Chullin one daf a day for 141 days, from daf 2 to daf 142, from May 2, 2026 to September 19, 2026; the 15th cycle, which opens with Berachos on June 8, 2027, reaches it on October 3, 2033. Masechta Chullin is in Seder Kodashim, the fifth of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Menachos and before Masechta Bechoros. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
