About Masechta Shevuos · מסכת שבועות

Shevuos learns oaths - the oath a person makes about himself, the oath of witnesses who deny they know testimony, the oath about a deposit and the oath in vain - and the oaths of beis din. It opens with an unusual pair, 'oaths are two that are four, the knowledge of tumah two that are four', and its first two perakim learn the korban brought by one who entered the Beis HaMikdash or ate kodashim while tamei without knowing it, and the goats that atone for it.

The third perek learns the oath about one's own actions and when it binds. The fourth, Shevuas HaEidus, learns the witness who swears falsely that he knows nothing; the fifth, Shevuas HaPikadon, one who denies a deposit; and the sixth, Shevuas HaDayanim, the oath beis din puts on one who admits part of a claim. The last perakim learn those who swear and take - a worker, a storekeeper, one who was robbed - and the four kinds of shomrim and the oaths of each.

Shevuos also teaches that the whole world trembled when Hashem said 'you shall not take the Name of Hashem in vain', and the care a judge must take to keep far from a false word.

From the pages of Shevuos

All Israel are responsible for one another; at Har Sinai the oath bound not only those standing there but every Jew of every generation; a student who sees his teacher err should not sit silent; and a judge who knows a judgment is false may not decide it and leave the sin on the witnesses. One who swears in vain - that a pillar of stone is gold - is given lashes; and one who swears to break a mitzvah has sworn nothing, for he already stands sworn from Har Sinai to keep it. The oath of the beis din is taken holding a holy thing in the hand - a Sefer Torah or tefillin.

This page holds 234 shiurim on Masechta Shevuos from 8 maggidei shiur; the most come from Rabbi David Elmaleh (79), Rabbi Eli Stefansky (48) and Rabbi Yoel Gold (48). 180 of them learn the whole daf and 54 are short reviews. 48 dafim have their own shiurim here, each in its own row above, and “Learn in the Daf Room” opens that daf with its text and its shiurim side by side.

Masechta Shevuos in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle learned Masechta Shevuos one daf a day for 48 days, from daf 2 to daf 49, from May 3, 2025 to June 19, 2025; the 15th cycle, which opens with Berachos on June 8, 2027, reaches it on October 4, 2032. Masechta Shevuos is in Seder Nezikin, the fourth of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Makkos and before Masechta Avodah Zarah. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
