About Masechta Gittin · מסכת גיטין

Gittin learns the get - the document of divorce - and how it must be written, signed and given for a marriage to end according to the Torah.

It opens with a shaliach who brings a get from overseas and must say 'before me it was written and before me it was signed', and learns why: people there did not know that a get must be written for this woman by name. The early perakim learn the writing of a get, its witnesses and their signatures. The fourth perek, HaSholei'ach, is a perek of takanos the Chachamim made for the good of the world: a man may not cancel a get behind his wife's back, the pruzbul of Hillel so that loans are not lost in shemittah, the freeing of slaves, and captives ransomed for no more than their worth. The fifth perek brings more such takanos, and here the Gemara tells the story of the Churban: Kamtza and Bar Kamtza, Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai carried out of Yerushalayim in a coffin who asked for 'Yavneh and its sages', and the fall of Beitar.

The last perakim learn a get given by a man who is ill, a get on condition, and the dispute of Beis Shammai, Beis Hillel and Rabbi Akiva on the reasons a man may divorce, ending with the words that the mizbe'ach sheds tears for one who divorces the wife of his youth.

From the pages of Gittin

A person should never put too much fear into his household; 'Torah and greatness in one place', said of Rebbi; and 'through the humility of Rabbi Zechariah ben Avkulas our House was destroyed'. If a person sees that his livelihood is tight, let him give tzedakah from it; and those who are insulted and do not insult back, who hear their shame and do not answer, are like the sun going out in its strength.

This page holds 608 shiurim on Masechta Gittin from 8 maggidei shiur; the most come from Rabbi Shmuel Silber (144), Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss (127) and Rabbi Eli Stefansky (90). 503 of them learn the whole daf and 105 are short reviews, and 1 are in Hebrew. 89 dafim have their own shiurim here, each in its own row above, and “Learn in the Daf Room” opens that daf with its text and its shiurim side by side.

Masechta Gittin in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle learned Masechta Gittin one daf a day for 89 days, from daf 2 to daf 90, from May 18, 2023 to August 14, 2023; the 15th cycle, which opens with Berachos on June 8, 2027, reaches it on October 19, 2030. Masechta Gittin is in Seder Nashim, the third of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes after Masechta Sotah and before Masechta Kiddushin. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
