About Masechta Niddah · מסכת נדה

Niddah, the last masechta of the daf yomi cycle, learns the laws of family purity - the times a woman is a niddah, a zavah or a yoledes - and the tumah and taharah they bring, which shape the life of a Jewish home. It opens with the dispute of Shammai and Hillel about a woman who sees blood: is she tamei only from the time she saw it, or back to her last examination?

The first perakim learn the bedikos, the checks a woman makes, the colours of blood, and a woman who loses a pregnancy - what she lost and how many days of tumah and taharah follow - and here the Gemara speaks of the forming of a child and the three partners in every person: his father, his mother and Hashem. The middle perakim learn the women of the Kutim and the signs of a boy's and a girl's maturity.

The seventh perek, Dam HaNiddah, learns which blood is tamei and which is not; the eighth, HaRo'eh Kesem, the laws of a stain; and the last perakim learn a woman's doubts and how they are decided, the fixed times, and a young girl married before her time. Niddah ends the Shas with the teaching of the house of Eliyahu: whoever learns halachos every day is assured of the World to Come.

From the pages of Niddah

A child in its mother's womb is taught the whole Torah, with a light shining above its head, and at birth an angel strikes it on the mouth and it forgets; before it is born it is made to swear: be a tzaddik and not a rasha, and even if the whole world tells you that you are a tzaddik, be in your own eyes as if you were not. Hashem gave women more understanding than men. The people of Alexandria brought Rabbi Yehoshua ben Chananyah twelve questions - three of wisdom, three of aggadah, three of foolishness and three of the way of the world - and he answered every one. And what should a person do to become wise? Learn much and trade little - and ask for mercy from the One to Whom wisdom belongs. Rabbi Meir taught why the Torah set seven days: so that a wife be as dear to her husband as on the day she came under the chuppah; and why does a man go looking for a wife? Like one who lost something and goes looking for what he lost. And when a boy comes into the world, peace comes into the world.

This page holds 121 shiurim on Masechta Niddah from 1 maggid shiur. 71 of them learn the whole daf and 50 are short reviews. 71 dafim have their own shiurim here, each in its own row above, and “Learn in the Daf Room” opens that daf with its text and its shiurim side by side.

Masechta Niddah in the Daf Yomi

The 14th Daf Yomi cycle reaches Masechta Niddah on March 28, 2027 and learns it one daf a day for 72 days, from daf 2 to daf 73, finishing on June 7, 2027. Masechta Niddah is in Seder Taharos, the sixth of the six orders of the Mishnah, and in the order of the Daf Yomi it comes last, after Masechta Middos, and the siyum of the whole Shas follows it. On each of those days the Daf Room opens the day's daf with its text and every shiur on it, and the rows above keep the shiurim of every daf of the masechta for anyone who learns at his own pace.
