The forgiving are forgiven. 🤝🏽 If someone suffers because of you – even if you’re right, no matter what the reason – you’ll ultimately suffer. Why? Your unwillingness to forgive causes the Heavenly Court to closely examine your own files and determine if you deserve the forgiveness and lenient the Hashem has given you. As well, the actions of an unforgiving person who is angry and seeks revenge show that he lacks emuna. To be forgiven above one must be forgiving below. And a person who doesn’t forgive others locks the door to his own forgiveness. The past few days have brought an unimaginable loss to Rabbi Shalom Arush and his family, with the tragic passing of his four-year-old grandson. At the levaya yesterday, even in the midst of such tremendous pain, Rabbi Arush continued to strengthen those around him with the message he has dedicated his life to teaching: emuna. To trust Hashem even when we cannot understand. To hold onto emuna even through the deepest pain. We are taught that sinat chinam brought destruction into this world, and through its opposite, ahavat chinam, we can bring redemption. What better way to honor a little boy named Shalom than by bringing more shalom into the world. In Shalom’s merit, let’s choose to love another Jew more. Judge less. Forgive easier. Look past our differences and remember that we are one people. May every act of ahavat Israel bring more shalom to Am Israel and to the world. לעילוי נשמת שלום

Parashat Shoftim begins with the command to appoint judges who will judge with righteousness. Rabbi Natan teaches that true judgment is an aspect of teshuva because it takes something that has been removed from its proper place and returns it to its root. The ultimate purpose of judgment is to bring peace. This is the message as we enter Elul: teshuva is not only about confessing our mistakes or being afraid of the approaching High Holy Days. Teshuva means returning to our true place, returning to ourselves, and returning to Hashem. Rebbe Nachman teaches that the journey begins with a single thought of teshuva: the realization that there is still hope. No matter what we have done or what we have been through, we can choose a new path. Even before we have taken the actual steps to change, the decision that we want to change and the knowledge that change is possible begins the process of teshuva. Teshuva is connected to the name of Hashem, אהיה, “I will be.” It is saying to Hashem and to ourselves: I am ready to be. I am ready to become who I am meant to be. I am ready for the journey of teshuva. We are beautiful souls created by Hashem in His infinite love. Teshuva is the journey of becoming who we truly are and returning to our root, our true home. We all want Mashiach. But what are we doing to bring him? Mashiach is not a shortcut to the work we are here to do. The opposite is true: the more we refine ourselves, the faster we bring Mashiach’s arrival. Work on your Torah learning. Strengthen your tefillah. Improve your character traits. Increase your emuna. Dedicate time each day to hitbodedut and speak to Hashem. Hashem doesn’t expect us to change overnight. Self-improvement is a lifetime’s work. This week’s parashot, Nitzavim–Vayelech, bring us to the final days of Moshe Rabbeinu’s leadership. All of Yisrael stands together before Hashem as Moshe prepares them to continue forward without him. He reminds them that the Torah belongs to every Jew, in every generation, and that no matter how far a person has fallen, the path back to Hashem is always open through teshuvah. “It is very close to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it.” And as Rosh Hashanah approaches, we are reminded that it is serious, but it is not meant to be frightening. We approach judgment with emuna: Hashem always loves me, everything is good, and it will only get better. What matters most is our ratzon. Ask Hashem for complete emuna, to let go of fear and anxiety, and to truly trust that everything is in His loving hands. Take time to look back at the year, recognize all the good Hashem has given you, and above all, stop and thank Hashem. 🍎🍯 Shabbat Shalom! 🕯️🕯️

We thank Him for the good, recognize where we fell, express our regret, ask for forgiveness, and ask for His help not to repeat those mistakes. A person who does this daily does not allow yesterday’s mistakes to simply pile onto today’s. Each day, they make a personal accounting and wipe the slate clean. We are born with a body that wants what it wants, when it wants it. As it is written, “Man is born a wild donkey.” The work of a person is to give birth to the human being within himself. It is easy to listen to the body. The body asks for comfort, pleasure, desire and immediate satisfaction. But when the body becomes the master, the soul is forced to serve it. And no matter how much pleasure a person gives the body, the soul can still feel empty. Our work is to reverse the order. The body was given to us to serve the soul, not the soul to serve the body. When a person learns to overcome his desires, refine his character and choose what nourishes his soul, he begins to experience a completely different kind of pleasure: sweetness in Torah, sweetness in prayer, emuna and closeness to Hashem. The body can give temporary pleasure. The soul gives life. This is the main teshuva we need to tap into for Yom Kippur… It all comes down to distorted emuna. Remind yourself and yell out loud in these days “Abba, You are my Abba! You love me!” 👨🏽‍🍼 In the prayers of Yom Kippur we say, “For we are Your children, and You are our Father.” Repentance must come from a place of recognition of the fact that Hashem is our loving Father and Abba. The first step of teshuva is fixing your emuna. Rabbi Nachman admits he had feelings when he was younger doubting Hashem’s desire for closeness but he would come back stronger and remind himself that Hashem loves him and wants him close! That was his turning point in teshuva.
