The masechta of the kosher kitchen
Chullin means “ordinary things” — non-sacred meat, the food of everyday life. The masechta walks through what makes an animal kosher on your table: how shechita must be done, which injuries render an animal a treifa, the sinew we remove, the separation of meat and milk, and the mitzvah of covering the blood of a bird or wild animal after shechita.
It is one of the most practical masechtos in Shas: a surprising amount of what a kosher home does every day traces straight to these dafim.
A rough map of the perakim
The masechta opens with who may shecht and how (the first perek), moves through the laws of the cut itself and what invalidates it, then spends its long middle on treifos — the famous “Eilu Treifos” — examining the animal from head to tail. Later perakim take up gid hanasheh, basar b'chalav, and the closing perakim deal with kisui hadam and the gifts given from an animal.
You do not need the map memorized — but knowing it exists changes how a daf feels. Each day's Gemara becomes a room in a house you can picture.
