[Music] [Applause] [Music] one of the major problems that existed in Jewish world the beginning of the in Jewish world the beginning of the 18th century 1700s was the inheritance of the terrible events of the 17th century we always deal with centuries as though they are arbitrary lines and can really separate time and events but in the real world that doesn't make a difference and the the events of 1648 difference and the the events of 1648 1649 the great pogroms the Gazzara stopped the thought that occurred when a quarter of a million Eastern European Jews were destroyed so until until the hour time until the 20th century at least that was considered big numbers it was an enormous tragedy for the Jewish communities and that was followed by the communities and that was followed by the folsome Saye of shopsite sweet in the 1650s and then that was followed by the reaction against jobsites me almost the witch-hunt against his supporters are people who believed in him so that when we come into the beginning of the 1700s we come into the beginning of the 1700s the Jewish world is pretty much reeling from the blows that have been inflicted upon it and we have to also add to the equation a very important item and that item being the ideas of the Enlightenment which is also the product of 17th and early 18th century Europe Western Europe England France and the ideas of the England France and the ideas of the Enlightenment undercut established religion it was basically anti-christian or if not anti-christian anti to church but it also turned out to be anti the ideas of and traditions of Judaism because of the fact that that undercut those ideas as well and the issue
