[Music] tonight's lecture concerns itself with the history of one of the main Jewish communities in Europe a community that flourished for 750 years and the flourished for 750 years and the community of Frankfurt our mine that's the reason that the lecture is starting on time tonight now there are old traditions regarding font for our mind as to what originally was founded as a Jewish community the earliest record that we have as a Jewish record that we have as a Jewish community dates from the beginning of the 1200s from the beginning of the 13th century it's interesting that when the Crusaders destroyed the other Jewish communities in Germany spires and worms and mites there's no record of Frankfurt at all and even in as late as 1241 there only were a hundred and eighty Jews that only were a hundred and eighty Jews that lived in Frankfurt and we'll see that Frankfurt was a relatively small community until well into the 17th century the history of Frankfurt can really be summed up in three words pogroms rabbis and disputes because the community had unfortunately great community had unfortunately great pogroms fortunately very great rabbis and again unfortunately very bitter disputes within the Jewish community itself and because of that therefore that's how it shaped the community the first pogrom that we have noted dates back again to 12:41 when the hundred and eighty Jews who lived in Frankfurt all were massacred and then Frankfurt all were massacred and then there was no community again until 1246 now in the 1200 it was the time of the Holy Roman Empire so there was an emperor and then there was the archbishop who rented the church the Catholic Church and then there was the city of Frankfort itself all three levied taxes against the Jews so that the Jews paid an
