[Music] today we're learning parashat mishpatim today we're learning parashat mishpatim passion patim is a parsha filled with many mitzvoth a lot of commandments a lot of ideas that may be new to us and a lot of surprising um concepts that living in modern society we might not be familiar with or we might be misinformed about and as we go through the parasha i'm going to point them out this parsha has point them out this parsha has 54 commandments 23 positive commandments and 31 negative commandments we're going to try to cover all of them but if we're short on time we'll skip the ones that are less common so we are on page 417 of the art scroll homage and chapter 25 verse 1 um starts these are the laws ordinances that you shall place before ordinances that you shall place before them the word ordinances means laws and in hebrew it is mishpatim means civil civil law uh it is these are laws that are governing society these are mostly not laws between god and man but rather laws between one man and his uh fellow so the first law so the first law that pasha bishop speaks about is about jewish slaves if you buy a jewish slave he shall work up to six years and in the seventh he will go free now what is the concept of a jewish slave there in judaism there are two kinds of slaves one is a jewish slave and one is a non-jewish
