okay so the last two weeks we have gone through the book of jonah in its entirety and uh learned the approaches the classic commentaries and hopefully now we have the story down pretty well and uh what i want to do tonight is try to develop some themes within yonah and really try to address the question of why we read yonah question of why we read yonah on yom kippur so at minha the afternoon service ong yom kippur we read for the haftarah we read the book of jonah say for yonah in its entirety um all four chapters which is unique because usually most uh torahs are just you know a chapter here a chapter there um four chapters is a lot to be reading in one half tara it's a long half torah so we have to we have to try to explore what does we have to try to explore what does the book of zhong i have to do with yom kippur so the most simple reasoning i would say the most obvious connection is that the book of jonah talks about chuva it talks about repentance yom kippur which is a day of repentance a day of teshuva so we read from yonah because that has numerous examples of teshuva first of all the sailors teshuva first of all the sailors on the ship they see god's intervention and they throw away their idols and they take vows that they'll worship god they'll bring offerings to god so we have there one example of teshuva but maybe probably the most prominent example is the people of ninbe people of ningway they hear jonah's warning and they do teshuva they repent
