[Music] we're discussing the 18th century 1700's uh the changes in the jewish world in jewish europe so last week i discussed the amsterdam the jews in holland and uh this week we're going to discuss london and the jews in england london and the jews in england in the 1700s but in order to understand the 1700s we have to back up a little and see what happened before the history of the jews in england uh ptosis already mentions that in the 11th and 12th centuries there were jews in england and they were in london those jews came from normandy they came from france from france basically from ron they were brought there by william the conqueror when the norman french conquered england he brought over about 200 jews and that was the basis of the jewish community in london to put up mildly in the middle ages the jews did not find london hospitable at all there were numerous uh riots against the jews of riots against the jews of accusations of all sorts culminating in a blood libel the jewish community was small and it was always beleaguered in 1290 the king expelled the jews from england after a series of uh terrible events in the twelve hundreds uh three four times the jewish communities were destroyed were destroyed the church persecuted the jewish community enormously it did not allow the synagogues to conduct services the church claimed that it was an affront to it that the jews even existed in england and the king finally in 1290 expelled the jews so from 1290 onwards we have a blank page because uh legally officially there are
