All right, good day and welcome to a new series. We did our longest series actually last year in our whole year on para and uh and now we're moving on to a series I'm very excited about and it's called Living with Light, the why behind the what of Jewish practice. And the idea is to go through different things that are familiar to us, practices, mitzvah, commandments, mitzvah, commandments, customs, all types of things that we do and try to understand better why we do them. And not just better, but maybe deeper because as we'll see today, we'll talk about something that is very familiar to us. We may have some ideas about what it's about, but there's always different layers to peel back. And uh really as a point of introduction, we have to clarify and distinguish between different types of distinguish between different types of practices. So we have Torah commandments, Torah mitzvos. We have rabbitic commandments, rabbitic ordinances, rabbitic law. It's on another level. And then we have just customs. Now customs could be binding too, but they're different. They're not something that was enacted by the sages. They don't have the same level of authority. And each one when approaching them from this type of topic is quite different. this type of topic is quite different. So for example, um if we're talking about Torah commandments, the why behind the what of mitzvos that we find from the Torah itself. So sometimes the Torah will give us a reason why we do it and but rarely very few are actually explicit what the reason behind the mitzvah is. Some of them are obvious, intuitive, some of them less so. Especially when we get into the realm of things that are more
