[clears throat] >> So, my first question is um what does uh what does kareth really mean being cut off and does it apply today? >> Um ultimately kareth means being cut off from Kadosh Baruchu, from God. Um sometimes the verb is doubled. Yikaret tikaret Yikaret tikaret and then the commentators say it has a double effect that earthly life of the person is shortened and also in the next world he's cut off from Kadosh Baruchu, cut off from God. >> [snorts] >> That ultimately means the soul ceases to exist. That's the the natural meaning of it. Now, there are a few things to say. First of all, this would only apply this would only apply to a transgression that was committed purposely, intentionally knowing that it was a transgression. And only certain transgressions carry this drastic uh result. And extremely importantly if a person does teshuvah then this result is wiped out. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> It does not does not occur. So, in order for a person to suffer the punishment of kareth he would have to be doubly rebellious. Number one, he would have to be rebellious in doing the action in the first place. And secondly, he would have to be rebellious in not doing teshuvah for having done the action in the first place. It can't be imposed on a person who did something by accident or out of a mere whim or a mere momentary weakness cuz that could be momentary weakness cuz that could be repaired. Um it's it's a little bit similar well, I'll leave that aside that's separate that's separate issue.
