Okay, good morning everyone. Hazak, I don't think you're joining us on this beautiful Friday morning. Erev Shabbat Kodesh. As my friend, we are studying together Parashat Bechukotai. We actually have a double header this week, Behar Bechukotai. And Parashat Behar begins uh excuse me, Parashat Bechukotai begins with the reward that's promised. Im Bechukotai telechu, God says, "If you follow my decrees, if you observe my commandments, venatati gishmechem commandments, venatati gishmechem be'itam." All the most beautiful blessings of rain, of produce, of fruits, of protection, of conquering your enemies, of children. All the blessings will come as a reward if you do my commandments. Of course, our rabbis tell us, Al tiyu ke'avadim hamishamshim et harav al menat lekabel pras. Our rabbis tell us in Pirkei Avot that really our motivation should not be that really our motivation should not be to serve for the reward. We shouldn't expect to get reward for doing something that um is my own good. Right? If I am uh if I take medicine, if I take medicine, I don't call my doctor up and say, "Hey doc, you know, I just wanted you to know I followed the amoxicillin instructions. I took one in the morning, one in the night. So um you know, if you want to send me a gift or you know, cuz I I send me a gift or you know, cuz I I listened to you. So maybe you want to reward me for listening to you." The doctor looks at you like you're majnun. What are you crazy? The >> [laughter] >> The medicine is [clears throat] saving your life. You should pay me that I gave you the medicine. So the doctor doesn't really reward his patient. Yet the Torah promises reward and blessing. Very interesting thing. >> [snorts] >> Why would Hashem need to reward me?
