Who would our father Abraham and our mother Sarah choose next week? To address this, we must first ask the great question: Why Abraham our father? This is the question that troubles us as we read the opening of this week's Torah portion, Parshat Lech Lecha. Before us is the main hero of the Jewish people, the story of our faith, the father of the Israeli nation. But why him? Why was Abraham singled out, and he alone, from all his generation, to be told by God that he would be made great, and that through him all the families of the earth would be blessed? Generally, the Torah tends to provide justifications for such choices: about Noah, it is said he was a righteous man , perfect in his generations; Noah walked with God. Moses our teacher is described in the Torah as someone who risked his life and intervened whenever he saw injustice, in Egypt and in Midian, regardless of the identity of the attacker or the victim. Jeremiah, Chapter 1: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you came forth from the womb I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations." All of these were exceptional men, but with Abraham, there is no mention of such things in the Written Torah. Looking in the Pentateuch, nothing unique is written about him, only that he was born, he had a father Terah, a brother Nahor, and a brother Haran, and suddenly: God
