Welcome to Episode 46 of the Goldenberg Destiny Project. So when we left off in the last episode, Salome, Queen Shlomzion, she was the queen after Yannai died. She was the queen and she ruled for ten years. She had two sons, Aristobulus and Hyrcanus, and she left instructions that Hyrcanus should be, the custom of the Hasmoneans was that the high priest was the king. They didn't split it. The king and the high priest were the same person. So she continued this custom and she left instructions that her older son, Hyrcanus, he should be the king and the high priest, and her younger son Aristobulus, he should have certain military responsibilities but those two positions should be occupied by Hyrcanus. She had an advisor. His name was Antipater. So let's talk, who is this Antipater? A few episodes ago we spoke about that Hyrcanus forcibly converted the Idumeans. There was a country, a province, something, that was Idumea which was descended from Edom, and he conquered this province and he forcibly converted the entire population. So what exactly does that mean that he forcibly converted them? First of all, I mean, you can't force somebody to convert, because it has to be done voluntarily. Coercing somebody to convert is not valid. It's not a conversion. So what is this? So in ancient times, conquerors very often would enslave populations. They would take the entire population as slaves, and these populations were not necessarily carted off to work in the fields picking cotton. That's not necessarily so. Many of them had crafts. They ran businesses. But they were slaves of the conqueror. They belonged to them. They were their property. We have to understand, in ancient times the institution of slavery was fundamental to the economies and to the working of the ancient systems of ancient societies. They didn't have labor costs.
