What’s said in this shiur
The opening of this shiur, in Rabbi Daniel Glatstein’s own words— taken from the captions, so names and Hebrew terms may be approximate.
Tisha B'Av is the most tragic day on our calendar. And yet, fasting on Tisha B'Av is a mitzvah. It's a mitzvah mid'rabbinim, d'rabbinim kabbalah, k'd'rabbinim Torah in. It's practically almost like a d'oraisa. We generally hold even mitzvahs d'rabbinim require kabbalah, certainly a mitzvah mid'rabbinim. So, here it goes. 10 kabbalahs that you could have to enhance your mitzvah of fasting on Tisha B'Av. Firstly, to have in mind you're being mikayem the mitzvah mid'rabbinim tsom hachamishi. This is the fast of the fifth month. One should think they're fasting to be mikayem the mitzvah of listening to the nevi'im. Number two, teshuvah. Whenever we're mikayem a mitzvah, one should be meharher teshuvah as they perform the mitzvah so that the mitzvah's done with the greatest purity. The Chida teaches in Mar Ba'etzba, whenever we're embarking on the performance of a mitzvah, one should be meharher teshuvah in preparation. Kabbalah number three, to do the mitzvah of the ahavah. We're fulfilling the mitzvah with love of Hashem as the Sefer Charedim teaches that a mitzvah's greatly enhanced when we're mikayem it b'ahavah. B'yirah, to do it with reverence, to do it with awe. That's another important ingredient in the fulfillment of a mitzvah. Number five, and it may come as a surprise, to do it b'simchah. We don't have simchah on Tisha B'Av, but still there is a simchah that we can be mikayem the mitzvah of fasting on Tisha B'Av. That is a fifth kabbalah when we're mikayem the mitzvah. Six, la'asot nachas ruach lifanav. To bring nachas to Hashem. It gives Ribono shel Olam Nachas when we fulfill his commands. That's a sixth kavana that we can have.
