The Hafetz Chaim finishes off his book Shmirat Halashon dedicated a whole perek the last one on the book of Lashon Hara. The last chapter is about the importance of Limud Hatorah of learning Torah. And why did he do that? Says the Hafetz Chaim Both Bet Hamikdash Bet Hamikdash that we had, the first one was destroyed because of three very big sins. But even though Klal Yisrael were doing those very grave sins, Hashem still did not destroy the first Bet Hamikdash. So why did it get destroyed? Alma Avda Aretz the Gemara says in Bava Metzia peh hey and Masechet Nedarim Alma Avda Aretz why did Hashem destroy the Bet Hamikdash the first one? Says the Gemara you're asking why did Hashem destroy the Bet Hamikdash? The Jews were doing Avodah Zarah in public streets. They were doing Gilui Arayot, they were Chalal Shabbat. What do you mean why did he destroy the Bet Hamikdash? Says the Gemara the Chachamim were asking the Jews were doing this for a while and Hashem still didn't destroy the Bet Hamikdash. What changed now? And Hashem answered them, you're right. Even though they were sitting for a while, but they were still learning Torah. Once they started becoming chilled when it comes to learning Torah, they lost their protection. You lose their protection says the Gemara, then all the sins of Gilui Arayot, Shfichut Damim, Avodah Zarah now
