hi everyone welcome to another edition of the sparm chatter podcast on this episode of the podcast I'm going to be joined once again by Professor Edward Fram who is associate professor of Jewish history and S yelen chair in Lithuanian and Eastern European Jewish culture Ed benan University of the neev and in this episode we'll be discussing his brand new book uh which is called the codification of Jewish law on the cusp of of modernity published by Cambridge University press which discusses Hala mainly focused on of Kyo so thank you Professor Fram for joining me once again thank you very much for having okay so let's start off why why did you decide to work on this book to publish a book on the development of Al let's call it and and really I should leave it to you to talk about is that what the book is about I know I read the title what exactly it's about and why you decided to write this book so I believe that certain in the 16th century which I think is a pivotal Century in terms of the history of hala Century in terms of the history of hala hala still is for Jewish communities around the world the Central and motivating factor in their lives that doesn't mean that everyone is an expert in halak it doesn't mean that everyone knows all the various books but Hala is still a guiding force and H under go a major change in the way it's used in the 16th century with the publication of schul but schul isn't published and accepted by everyone there are old traditions that exist and there are
