Then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you, and He will return and gather you from all the peoples where the Lord your God has scattered you. This verse in the weekly Torah portion, embodies, according to some of our early sages, the commandment of repentance—the mitzvah we are very busy with these days. Everyone knows the plagues of their own heart, what they need to repent for before the Holy One, blessed be He. As the Maharal writes: it is to return the soul to its natural, simple place; that is called returning. This is called repentance. The problem does not begin and end with the transgressions between us and our Creator. Why? Because the sins between us and the Creator, blessed be He, even if we know how to cut—heaven forbid, I’m not talking about this holy crowd —we still haven't reached the sins of the ancients.
