Peace and blessings and good evening. Tonight we will reflect on the guidance that King Solomon, the wisest of all men, gives us regarding one of the deepest aspirations every thoughtful person carries, the desire to achieve true happiness in life. How does one reach a state of happiness? What is the real definition of happiness? In the following verses, King Solomon twice uses the word ashray. Happy is the one who does such and such. Happy is the one who does such and such. In other words, this is the truly happy person. Let us begin with a study conducted by a researcher at the Technon. He discovered a serious mistake people often make. They confuse pleasure with happiness. He explained that it is crucial to distinguish between the two. Pleasure is connected to physicality and material things and it quickly passes. Happiness however fills the soul and it lasts over time. lasts over time. As an illustration he gave an example that while based on research any person can recognize from their own experience. Suppose you ask someone what is your favorite food and he answers chocolate cake. Now imagine that you bring him the best chocolate cake in the world, baked by the greatest pastry chef at the highest level of skill and artistry. The cake costs thousands of dollars and everything in it is perfect. He eats the everything in it is perfect. He eats the first slice. The pleasure is overwhelming, full of excitement. We could rate it 100. On the second slice, the pleasure already drops significantly. By the third, even more. And if he keeps going, he reaches the point where he feels like he's chewing sand.
