"Let us learn, then let us understand." Meaning, in Torah study, it is not always possible to explain right at the beginning. Especially for someone who hasn't learned the subject well yet; it's new to him, so first of all, just read. That is how the Rishonim would speak. "Girsa" is half an explanation. What is "Girsa"? Like a mill that grinds; that is how Rashi writes. What is "grinding"? Ah... >> Mills that take wheat. >> And break them into two parts or four; that is what he says is a "bur"( millstone). >> A millstone. You don't know what a millstone is? >> I will take you to the market, okay? A tour tomorrow. In short: "Let us learn, then let us understand"—meaning, first read, and afterwards, explain the words. Why? So that, little by little, he will enter into the matter. He brought a verse that says, "My soul breaks (garsa) for longing." Where is that? Job? >> Ah. >> Yes. Okay, so "My soul breaks for longing." From here he brought proof that one can study Torah initially by reading, and afterwards explain. Why? Because it is known there is a great dispute among the Rishonim. Is it permitted to study Torah—does a person who studies Torah without understanding fulfill the obligation of Torah study or not? The intent. >> Why? >> The Rabbi told him that two chapters with understanding are worth more than ten chapters without understanding. >> Because the essence of the mitzvah of Torah study is that one understands what he is studying. But if he doesn't
