The shiur in English

The Yanuka’s own words in this shiur, translated into English by Lehallel · 4,605 words · 31:18. Press a time to hear it said.

0:00 I am very embarrassed to even come and speak before you, and to try to speak to your hearts. But I said to myself: I meet many sick people every day, and I meet so many wonderful Jews, and, baruch Hashem, I have truly merited to see the beauty and the splendor of our people, the special people who do so much good and so much kindness among the Jewish people, and all the good that is done.

0:58 And it is a privilege for me to come here, to be with you and to see you. And I pray to the Holy One, blessed be He, that He send you a complete healing from Heaven, and that Hashem, blessed be He, do miracles and wonders for you, that you have miracles and wonders, signs and marvels, and that everything work out for you for the good. Amen.

1:23 Every day that people come here in the afternoon, may they come to learn more and more, to be strengthened and to strengthen, and to help one another. This is something... I tell you, I am here, I had hardly come in, and I was truly moved by the words, by the people who are here. Simply angels. Angels. Simply holy angels, every single one.

1:49 I truly have no words to say it. Women, children, men, each and every one of you, may the Holy One, blessed be He, watch over you and bless you and strengthen you and encourage you. I know how hard it is for each one at night. You go... there are those who find it hard, and you care for the sick, and the sick person is alone, he feels that he is lonely.

2:15 You know, the Sages teach us in the Babylonian Talmud, we have our Talmud, where the Sages teach, in Tractate Shabbos, page 12b, the Gemara says that the Shechinah rests above the head of the sick person. The sick person is not alone. Know that the Shechinah is here more than at the Western Wall. Crowds run to the Kosel to receive a blessing; here one feels the kedushah more than at the Kosel.

2:41 The Shechinah is here not the way it is at the Kosel, because the Holy One, blessed be He, is with you. "In all their distress, He is distressed." Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish, in Tractate Megillah, page 13b, Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish says that the Holy One, blessed be He, always prepares the cure before the blow comes. People always come, each one suffers some troubles, each one suffers afflictions, and people go through all kinds of problems, all kinds of illnesses, all kinds of troubles, and they do not know that the Holy One, blessed be He, already prepares the cure before it comes. The Holy One, blessed be He... true, there is a blow, true, there is trouble, but the Holy One, blessed be He, has prepared the cure for you first. Know that you have a cure, and it is possible to come out of anything.

3:25 There is no such thing as something that is not possible. You must engrave this within yourselves. The Sages teach us in Tractate Avos, chapter 1, mishnah 7: "Do not despair because of calamity." When calamity comes, do not despair. True, the reality is hard right now, true, you are... you are in a moment of darkness, but the Sages also taught us and showed us that when this hard time comes... promise me that you will not break.

3:53 Do not despair because of these moments that seem so very hard to you, moments of calamity, moments of hardship. Do not despair because of them. You must be strong, because the mind is the most important thing there is. Despair is the main part of the illness. It is very important that you know that the great healing is found in strength, in encouragement and in hope.

4:22 You fulfill the Sages' words with joy. Here is our clown, who makes us happy, a medical clown, with Hashem's help. I am a clown too, it is all right. We are together. I am a clown too. Hashem, blessed be He, always loves us, and He always loves everyone. True. Come, let us strengthen you. Yasher koach. May you always be given to bring joy. Joy and a smile heal everyone. Amen. I love you too.

4:48 There was a Jew here earlier who told me in tears, it moved me very much, that he lost his son to illness, and since then he is here every day and night. Here he is. He brings joy to Jews. And look what souls, what tzaddikim are here. The Jewish people, these are our tzaddikim. May the Holy One, blessed be He, watch over you. Usually, when I meet Jews... I get to meet so many Jews in all kinds of situations, but mainly the meetings are with sick people, unfortunate people, people with problems, all kinds of people that I meet.

5:25 And it is so fascinating to see this world that exists inside a person. What wondrous people there are in this world. It teaches me so much, more than I... I receive so much strengthening and strength for life from it, more than I influence them at all. It is truly so. I only pray to the Holy One, blessed be He, that He continue to let us see this goodness and these wondrous Jews that there are in the world.

5:52 What I wanted to tell you is the importance of strengthening, of strength, of hope and of encouragement. Know that this is the main part of healing. The Sages teach us in Tractate Moed Katan, page 26b, something very, very, very important, which holds a lesson, a very great lesson, regarding a sick person. I will give you an example. The Gemara says there that a person who is sick, and, Heaven forbid, may it not happen to anyone of the Jewish people, a relative of his passed away, the Gemara says not to tell him.

6:27 Why? Lest his mind be overwhelmed, and because his mind is overwhelmed, Heaven forbid, he would die from the turmoil of mind that would enter him. Because he must be strong. It is forbidden to tell him. We do not want to cause him pain, the sick person. Because the sick person has hardship as it is. The sick person is struggling as it is. We do not want to weaken the sick person.

6:51 We want to encourage him. So we do not even tell him hard things. So from here we also learn the reverse: that if we take the sick person, make him happy and give him strength so that he smiles and is in a good frame of mind, the smile will heal him, save him, and make him a healthier person. So first of all you must know that the great strengthening lies in this, because it gives a person so, so, so much strength and hope.

7:23 It is important to know that there is no despair in the world at all, and it is possible to come out of anything in the world. Truly, you know, there is a verse in the Torah in which all the healings are found, in this verse, and the blows that exist in the world are also found in this verse. There is a very beautiful question on it from Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, in Likutei Moharan, part 2, Torah 5. Rabbi Nachman of Breslov speaks about this.

7:47 He says, it is written in the verse: "And He said: If you will surely listen to the voice of Hashem your G-d, and do what is upright in His eyes, and give ear to His mitzvos, and keep all His statutes, all the sickness that I put upon Egypt I will not put upon you, for I am Hashem, your Healer." Rabbi Nachman asks a very beautiful question. In truth, his question is already in Tractate Sanhedrin, page 101; the Gemara indeed asks the same question, in the name of Rabbi Yochanan. What he asks is: of course, if you listen, then of course the Holy One, blessed be He, says He will not put any illnesses upon you, Heaven forbid.

8:17 And if you do not listen, Heaven forbid, then, Heaven forbid, it is not good. That is what the Gemara says there. But Rabbi Nachman says something very beautiful. He says that if a person is in a certain place where he is badly damaged in emunah, which is "Hashem will make your blows extraordinary," Heaven forbid, when a person falls into the flaw in emunah that is despair, when he does not believe that Hashem can save him, when he falls into such smallness of emunah, it is from there that all the illnesses come.

8:44 A person must be strong in the power of Hashem, because with the power of Hashem it is possible to come out of anything. You know that we, the Jewish people, were in the land of Egypt. Moshe Rabbeinu came to redeem us. We were in the land of Egypt, and Moshe Rabbeinu went to save us. Moshe Rabbeinu came to the Jewish people and said to them: "Come, the time has come to leave." The Jewish people look at him and say: "Where did he come to us from, this man? What is this, madness?

9:10 Do you not see where we are? Do you not see what we struggle with every day? Look, see how much work there is, that we have to make the clay and the mortar and build with our own hands. What do you want from us? Leave to where? Where would we go? Egypt is shut and sealed." We... they were all in wheelchairs there in Egypt. A brick would fall on a man and his hand was cut off; a brick would fall, and a leg.

9:34 They were maimed at the hand of Egypt. "What do you want from us?" When a man was working, suddenly a brick would fall on him from above and tear off his hand, and he had to keep working. It tore off his leg, and the Egyptian struck him with a whip: "Keep going." We remember the Exodus from Egypt so much, more than all other things. This is the important thing that the Holy One, blessed be He, says: Remember Me, that I took you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

10:00 "You shall have no other gods before Me." Remember who took you out of the land of Egypt: I, the G-d of Israel. I took you out. What are you afraid of? And then Moshe Rabbeinu goes to the burning bush. He goes, and the Midrash says that he sees a mountain full of birds, full, full of birds, something like a billion birds he saw there. He comes near to these birds, and then all the birds flew off as he went up the mountain. He finds himself facing a tree, a thorny one, the bush, and this fire was burning; the bush burned with seven kinds of fire, seven kinds of colors. Rabbi Yaakov Culi, in his book Me'am Lo'ez, on Parshas Shemos, writes that there were seven kinds, seven colors, fire of blue, and purple, and green, and red,

10:42 burning like that, and this bush, the tree, was not consumed. It is a wonder: how is there a tree that burns but is not consumed? Moshe Rabbeinu looks and gazes into this tree, into the fire: "Why is the bush not burned up?" And then the Holy One, blessed be He, begins to reveal Himself to him. He says to him: "I am the G-d of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov. I am the great G-d of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov. By My Name Hashem I was not known to them. I was not revealed to them with the revelation by which I am revealed to you.

11:10 And I want you to go to the Jewish people and tell them that I... that the time has come to redeem them." And then Moshe Rabbeinu says to Him: "What? How do You think... how will I go to them? They will not listen to me. How can I even speak?" And then the Holy One, blessed be He, says to Moshe Rabbeinu: "Who gave man a mouth? Who gave man the ability to speak at all? Who opens the eyes of the blind? Who lets a man walk?

11:34 Who can open the mouth of the mute? I. I am Hashem. I made all of this. I created the world. Do you understand My power at all?" And Moshe Rabbeinu is shaken. He understands that the Creator Himself has been revealed to him. He asks Him His Name, and He says to him: "I Will Be What I Will Be." Moshe Rabbeinu goes from there and goes to the land of Egypt, and begins to do the miracles and the wonders in the land of Egypt.

11:59 And the Jewish people understand that Moshe Rabbeinu is going to take them out of there. But think about the biggest problem there was. "We are missing limbs. We are without legs, without hands. What good is it to us if we leave? And where would we go?" Here came the heavenly solution. The Jewish people kept the first Shabbos at Alush, and the Holy One, blessed be He, sent down the manna for them, which fell for Israel; in the book of [unclear], chapter [unclear], it is written in Rashi that the manna came down for Israel; on the 15th of Iyar the manna came down for them from Heaven, and the Jewish people ate this manna.

12:39 It was absorbed into their limbs and grew limbs for them. Do you hear? Those missing legs, suddenly legs grew for them. A man without a hand, a hand grew for him. A blind man began to see. A mute began to speak. Everyone began to see, to be new. That is why it is called lechem abirim, the bread of the mighty. Why is it named lechem abirim? Lechem eivarim, bread of the limbs. It is absorbed into the limbs; it grows limbs for Israel.

13:08 It grows everything for them. "And each man said to his brother: man hu." Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Rimanov writes: "Each man said to his brother: man hu," who is he? They did not recognize one another. They said: "Wait, tell me, isn't that Yosef?" "No, it makes no sense, that is not Yosef. No way. Yosef had no legs yesterday." "Are you sure?" He said to him: "Listen, but he looks like him in the face." He said to him: "Yes, it is Yosef." He turns to him, he says to him... "each man said to his brother: man hu": "Listen, it is Yosef! I do not believe it. Wow, he grew legs, he grew hands!"

13:36 And then everyone understood that the Holy One, blessed be He, had healed them and given them the Torah, so that it not be said that maimed people received the Torah. We must know that the great G-d in Heaven, the G-d of Israel, our G-d, the G-d of Israel, the Almighty, rules over all of creation. He can bring us healing. We have no despair and we are not to lose any hope. No matter what state you are in, and no matter what they tell you.

14:05 I also want to tell you one more point from this. The doctors are tzaddikim. They do their work faithfully, and yasher koach for all that they do. I always say: a great yasher koach to the doctors, and there are many doctors here too, and I bless them that they succeed, and everything. But it is always their duty to remember, earlier we learned the Gemara in Moed Katan... The nurses, the righteous women who are here, the nurses, the righteous women, applause! The nurses are righteous, truly righteous nurses, who give their very souls here in all the wards here, and all the professors and the heads of the wards and all the doctors.

14:43 Truly, fortunate are you. May the Holy One, blessed be He, bless you with all the blessings. Amen. — Maimon ben Shula, bless Maimon ben Shula. Maimon ben Shula, and all of them, everyone. — I have been here three years. When will I be released home? Bless me. He is Tal Natan ben Shoshana; he wants to be released home. [unclear] May the Holy One, blessed be He, redeem all of you from every pain and every illness. But always remember, meanwhile, since you are already here, you are already here, try to feel that you are in the holiest and best place in the world.

15:20 Never break. And you must remember also that the doctors sometimes give us a kind of despair, a little. Sometimes a doctor comes and shows you a test result and tells you the situation is not good, and it tries to bring despair and to break you. It is forbidden to break. This is a test that we are going through. And I also say, as we learned earlier, the Gemara in Moed Katan, page 26, the Gemara teaches us that we must be careful not to deliver the message to a person that, Heaven forbid, something has happened to him, so that his mind not be overwhelmed. We do not want anything to happen to him.

15:51 So too they must be careful not to give a message that can weaken and break the sick person. They inform him of his condition and what he must do, but not to give him a prophecy: "You have no time left, you will not hold on, you will not live." Not to bring people to despair, Heaven forbid. Because, baruch Hashem, our own eyes have seen, and not a stranger's, quite a few of whom the doctors said they had nothing left, and they are alive to this day.

16:15 He was critically wounded, critically. Four pieces of shrapnel in the head. When I got to know him, half his body was paralyzed. Stand up a moment, stand up a moment. Slowly, slowly. [unclear] He is a tangible miracle, a tangible miracle. Good. Health, a good life, with Hashem's help. May you see from one end of the world to the other.

16:40 Half his body was paralyzed. — I tell everyone here: I walk around here with the Holy One, blessed be He. The Rav said that the Shechinah is above the head of the sick person. I said this to other wounded men too. Why am I here? Because I walk hand in hand with the Holy One, blessed be He, all the time. There are miracles upon miracles here; one can see miracles upon miracles of people here. — He is an open miracle, a proven open miracle. "Give thanks to Hashem, for He is good."

17:08 This is the boy, Eli Saad ben Galil. For two years now he has been making barbecues for the soldiers and bringing joy to families. Eli Saad ben Galil. Eli Saad ben Galil, may the Holy One, blessed be He, strengthen you. Health, a good life, salvations. You know, the Gemara says about this miracle, that it... about miracles that happen to a sick person, the Gemara says something very startling. Tractate Nedarim, page 41a, the Gemara says that the miracle done for a sick person is greater than the miracles done for Chananyah, Mishael and Azaryah in the fiery furnace.

17:42 Did you hear? The miracle of the sick person who is healed is greater, greater than that of Chananyah, Mishael and Azaryah of the fiery furnace. Why? The Gemara says: here, he was saved from a fiery furnace, a fire that an ordinary person lit. A simple man can light a fire. Anyone. But the Gemara says: the fire that is in the sick person is a fire from Above. Who can put it out? Only the Holy One, blessed be He.

18:08 He decides to heal the sick person, and He heals him. But we must always persuade the King to send us a complete healing. Amen. And so I say: be strong with all your strength, with all the strength you possibly can, and think good thoughts, thoughts of hope. I know that you are here through the nights, and the days, and the mornings, with the feeling that your loved one is here and suffering, and you see him suffering, and you suffer too, and he suffers too, and he also sees you suffering. And you must show a shining face.

18:42 Show a shining face, smile, be joyful. — One more moment, let the Rav finish with you. We also want to give you a bit of a niggun; we will give a little of that too. We came so that you would have a good atmosphere here, and the joy of being with you. And with Hashem's help, we bless everyone, everyone, everyone, everyone, all of you. — I also want to tell of a miracle, only my husband does not speak Hebrew.

19:11 He was already... in bed [unclear] and something happened to him inside the brain, a bullet passed through his head, inside the skull. And he went through two surgeries in 15 hours, and two more catheterizations, and they thought he would be a vegetable, and that it was over.

19:38 And I prayed hard and I believed in the Holy One, blessed be He. [unclear] Unbelievable. "Give thanks to Hashem, for He is good." And today we are being released.

20:03 [unclear] ...a good life. Amen. Be strong. May the Holy One, blessed be He, strengthen you. [unclear] I want to strengthen the hands of Reb Yitzchak, who went to such trouble and asked so much that I come, and this is something so important to him. Yitzchak too is an open miracle. — I said... I started with him when he was unconscious, [unclear] I brought Ishay Ribo to him; Ishay sang to him while he was unconscious. [unclear] I merited it.

20:42 Our Reb Yitzchak... you know, Chananyah, Mishael and Azaryah were in the fiery furnace. And Yitzchak was in the fiery furnace and came out, and the fire had no power over him, in our generation. He remained fair of form and fair of appearance. No problem remained in him at all, nothing. May you be a groom, with a wedding soon, amen. May there be such joy, amen. May the Holy One, blessed be He, give you joy, amen, for your good heart, amen, for all that you wanted here and all your effort, amen. With his righteous mother, with his righteous mother, he organizes the...

21:30 A serious thing. — I began, baruch Hashem, to be in the Rav's shadow at times, and to see the self-sacrifice, all the stories that come to the Rav, all the sick people, all the broken people, both in body and in soul.

22:09 And the Yanuka always tells me about all of them, especially those who were wounded in the fighting and who lost limbs, or who were wounded in their souls, that this is really the offering closest to... an offering to Hashem, blessed be He, to the altar.

22:37 That everyone should remember that the pain they go through has meaning, and it has... it has... Hashem runs the world, and for whoever was wounded, there is a reason. I say personally that I know there is hardship, and that sometimes it is hard to see the light and hard to hold on, and there is despair.

23:13 But I truly, truly think, from the place of what I have been through, today, and the road I have traveled, the wound has meaning. Hashem chose the one who was wounded. Because I think that this place of darkness, from it one can reveal light. Precisely from the darkest place, there one can reveal a new light. Precisely from the falls, precisely from the despair, precisely from our greatest falls, we grow. And with Hashem's help, may we all take this place, this hardship, and turn it into growth, turn it into strengthening and drawing close to the Holy One, blessed be He. In the end, Hashem wants to do miracles, to show His power in the world, that we may know His greatness in the world. With Hashem's help, may we merit to come out strong and turn our weakness into strength, to show other people strength, with Hashem's help, out of

24:20 [unclear] as we said. With Hashem's help, all the Jewish people together. [unclear] ...got married, and they have not been blessed with children. They have not been blessed... [unclear] it is hard. Great salvations are needed. [unclear] months, tzaddik. Come, let us try to bring him closer for a second. Just bring the bed over here. There is one more here, Eitan David ben Tov.

24:49 Eitan David ben Tov. Eitan David ben Tov. Amen! Amen! Amen! Amen! May He stand him on his feet. Amen! Amen! Miracles and wonders. Amen! Health and life. Amen! Amen! Amen! Amen! In the merit of the holy Torah.

25:17 Niggunim, a few niggunim. [unclear] Let the sick take. Let the people get to the Rav.

28:38 The families of the sick, take... [unclear] Amen. Amen. The Rav organizes the shiurim here, the Rav.

29:25 The Rav organizes the shiurim here. Keep on increasing the shiurim here, enlarging the kollel here. Nu! Mind your hands, tzaddikim. Hands out, hands out. I will say the tefillah of Chizkiyahu here, right here on the spot. "A writing of Chizkiyahu, king of Yehudah, when he was sick and recovered from his sickness. I said: In the cutting off of my days I shall go to the gates of the grave; I am deprived of the rest of my years.

29:53 I said: I shall not see Hashem, Hashem in the land of the living; I shall look upon man no more, with the dwellers of the world. My dwelling is pulled up and removed from me like a shepherd's tent. I have rolled up my life like a weaver; He cuts me off from the loom. From day to night You bring me to an end. I waited until morning; like a lion, so He breaks all my bones. From day to night You bring me to an end. Like a swift, a crane, so I chirp; I moan like a dove. My eyes are lifted on high: Hashem, I am oppressed; be my surety.

30:21 What shall I say? He has spoken to me, and He Himself has done it. I shall walk softly all my years over the bitterness of my soul. Hashem, by these things men live, and in all of them is the life of my spirit. Heal me and give me life. Behold, for my peace I had bitterness, bitterness; but You have lovingly held back my soul from the pit of nothingness, for You have cast all my sins behind Your back. For the grave does not thank You, death does not praise You; those who go down to the pit do not hope for Your truth. The living, the living, he shall thank You, as I do today; a father shall make Your truth known to his children.

30:51 Hashem is ready to save me, and we will play my songs all the days of our lives at the House of Hashem."
