of Shma. He's going to talk about how a person should say the Shma. And finally, he's going to talk about different situations in reading the Shma that may disqualify it or may not disqualify it and interruptions that happen in middle of the Shma. Perek Sheini Halacha Aleph. Hakorei es Shma v'lo kiyven libo, if somebody reads the Shma but he did not concentrate his heart on the first pasuk of Shma, "Hear O Israel, Hashem is our God, Hashem is one", lo yatza yedei chovaso, this person did not fulfill his obligation. V'hashaar, but the rest of the Krias Shma im like kiyven, even if he didn't have kavana, yatza, he fulfills his obligation. So, the Rambam here is telling us a fundamental halacha and that is when we read the Shma, the first pasuk, Shma Yisrael Hashem Elokeinu Hashem Echad, the person has to have kavana saleiv, the person has to focus his mind and his heart on the words and on the theme of this verse, Shma Yisrael Hashem Elokeinu Hashem Echad, and if not, you did not fulfill your obligation. The Rambam continues, "Afilu haya korei b'Torah k'darko, even if a person is learning Torah in a regular way and it happens to be he comes to the parsha of Shma, oi magiya, or a person, a sofer, a scribe, he's editing, he's fixing a Sefer Torah es haparshiyos ha'eilu bein es krias and he happens to be reading or editing these parshiyos in the time of the reading of the Shma, yatza, he fulfills his obligation v'hu she kiyven libo b'pasuk rishon, as long as he had kavana in the first possible. So in other words, if I'm a safer and I'm correcting the safer torah and I happen to be reading through these parshas of shma because I'm trying to make sure the ink is good and the letters are clear
