The shiur in English

The Yanuka’s own words in this shiur, translated into English by Lehallel · 368 words · 2:12. Press a time to hear it said.

0:08 Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said: It is better for a person to throw himself into a fiery furnace and not shame his fellow in public. And there is no point to the lighting if we do not remember the saying of Rabbi Shimon. He repeated this - in Tractate Berachos, page 43b, and Sotah, page 10b, and Bava Metzia, page 59a - three times in the Talmud, in the name of the holy Tanna, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai: that it is better for a person to throw himself into a fiery furnace and not shame his fellow in public.

0:40 The whole reason a bonfire is lit all over the world is to remember what Rabbi Shimon said, that it is better for a person to go into the fiery furnace and not cause pain to any Jew, and not shame anyone's face, And this is the main point of the lighting: to engrave very, very well in our minds this saying of Rabbi Shimon.

1:05 And whoever cleaves to the holy book Chofetz Chaim presumably merits this lighting anew every day, every moment. Rabbi Shimon said, in Sotah, page 32b, that the reason they instituted the silent prayer is so as not to shame transgressors. This is a reason of Rabbi Shimon's. In Tractate Kiddushin, page 40b, Rabbi Shimon said: even a wicked man at the end of his days, who regrets all his sins - then they no longer mention his wickedness to him. It is no more - all the wickedness he did...

1:31 This too is a word of compassion of Rabbi Shimon's. And this word, not to shame transgressors, this too is a thought of Rabbi Shimon's; this is the compassion of Rabbi Shimon. These sayings of Rabbi Shimon are to reveal the mercy of Hashem, blessed be He, in the world, that is the reason. And so we see that Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai revealed, each time, the compassion of Hashem, and his intent was to draw down the compassion of Hashem, and to reveal the mercy of Hashem in the world. And this is the main thing and the purpose in this world: to reveal His compassion, may He be blessed, upon the creatures.
