The opening of this shiur, in Rabbi Asher Weiss’s own words — taken from the captions, so names and Hebrew terms may be approximate.

So, it's always a pleasure to be back again. I understand that we have some guests from chutz la'aretz. I just got back from Europe very early this morning. So, I am somewhat exhausted because uh I never sleep on planes. But, baruch Hashem, so it's a pleasure to be b'Atra Kadisha Hadayan in this very special Yeshiva. And today I understand that we have a busy schedule. First, a schmooze, and then we're going to have lunch with some of our dear friends, and then a shiur for the Yarchei Kallah. So, we are in the midst of the three weeks. And in Yiddishkeit, everybody knows what three weeks mean. You don't need to explain which three weeks. Those are the three weeks of mourning, starting by Shiva Asar B'Tammuz and reaching a climax on the terrible day of Tisha B'Av. And these are three weeks of mourning. The Chasam Sofer says, the Gemara says at the end of Maseches Ta'anis, Kol hamisabel al Yerushalayim, zocheh v'ro'eh b'vinyana. All those that mourn the loss, the destruction of Yerushalayim, are zocheh to see its rebuilding. And the Chasam Sofer comments, Chazal should have said, Kol hamisabel al Yerushalayim yizkeh v'yireh b'vinyana. The loshon zocheh v'ro'eh is in the present tense and not in the future tense. So, the Sems says the fact mourn tragedy that struck 2,000 years ago is strange. No other nation, no other people in the world could sit and cry because of tragic events that happened 2,000 years ago. We weren't there. Why would we care? The fact that we mourn Jerusalem proves that Jerusalem is alive. It's not the past. It's the present.
