there are problems that affect so many and yet so few talk about them which is why Rabbi EF from Goldberg and moshiakness bring you out of the Shadows a Jewish approach to Mental Health Rabbi Goldberg and Moshe speak to leaders in the field and discuss contemporary challenges to help us better understand mental health and those who are struggling with it this month's topic OCD on this episode we are joined by Rabbi Dr Jonathan Schwartz critical director for the center of Anxiety Relief and Rabbi of congregation out of Israel in Elizabeth New Jersey Morty Gottlieb a if you're a neat freak or you're cleaning well for pesach you're not OCD don't use that term unless it applies so when does it apply motion talk to us as an introduction what is OCD yeah so very good thank you again Rabbi Goldberg it's always great to see you again and work on this special project so OCD is you know it's an anxiety disorder it stands for you know obsessive compulsive disorder and really it's a clinical presentation comprised of two aspects number one is an obsessive thinking pattern intrusive thoughts um and and those thoughts are so um and and those thoughts are so dominating that it ends up affecting a person's functionality their ability to feel relaxed and and participate in Daily functions uh and the second aspect to it is compulsion which is a a behavior associated with it an attempt to try to resolve this anxiety-provoking thought a classic example is I feel dirty I'm scared that I'm going to get sick because of the germs on my fingers and therefore I will compulsively wash my hands That's a classic example and it's so clear because it really highlights both aspects of it the
