Shalom Aleichem. Welcome to the weekly Breslov Parshah Shiur. This Shabbos, the Torah reading is Shemos. Shemos is the beginning of the second book of the Torah, Exodus as they call it. And it starts with the story of Yaakov and his twelve children in Mitzrayim, coming down to Egypt. And it tells of the miraculous births of the Jewish nation: Bnei Yisrael paru va'yishretzu va'yirbu va'ya'atzmu bime'od me'od. Six words indicating that they had sextuplets - every single birth. Six children were born at every birth. So that the Jewish nation grew rapidly and with incredible speed. It seemed that they were overtaking the Egyptians. The Egyptians saw, and they thought they had the greatest community, the greatest nation, the greatest empire on the planet. And they decided that they don’t want any competition from the Jews - so they enslaved them. Pharaoh took mortar and bricks and started building, and the Egyptian overseers, the army, they said to the Jews, “Pharaoh himself is building, you should also build.” Well, the Jews liked the competition, so they went into the business of building. Then all of a sudden Pharaoh stopped, but the Egyptians said, “You were building - you’re going to build more, and you’re going to be slaves to us.” And they enslaved the entire Jewish nation. Six hundred thousand people, except for the tribe of Levi, were enslaved by the Egyptians. 86 years, they lived through terrible, terrible oppression. They knew what it meant to be a slave - backbreaking labor, horrendous punishments.
