What’s said in this shiur

The opening of this shiur, in Ades Synagogue’s own words — taken from the captions, so names and Hebrew terms may be approximate.

The 28th of Cheshvan, the 13th yahrzeit (anniversary of passing) of Maran, our teacher and rabbi, the Rishon LeZion, Rabbeinu Ovadia Yosef, of blessed memory. And again, let us dedicate today's lesson to a few matters. In memory of what we study. We will learn a moral lesson from him for ourselves. I was privileged, thank God, to be close to him for over 20 years. I assisted him in writing—not the writing of the books themselves, but in proofreading them and transcribing his manuscripts. Therefore, I will also incorporate things that I may have seen , or things he wrote in his own hand, regarding the topic we want to discuss today. I am also shortening the lesson a bit because I have several places to be today, so I will finish around 7:45. In any case, the topic I want to talk about today is the matter of Torah classes, and the Rabbi's opinion and conduct regarding this. Since, thank God, here in this place, the Ades Synagogue, is an important place for Torah and prayer, for singing praises to the Holy One, blessed be He, and about a year ago this class was established here—there is a class here every day of the week, around seven o'clock, on diverse topics: whether in Halacha, in the weekly Torah portion, ethics, and other subjects by important, God-fearing Torah scholars. We must strengthen Torah classes and set fixed times for Torah study. Let us speak a little about how much the Rabbi sacrificed himself for this matter of setting fixed times for Torah study and attending Torah classes. How much he encouraged people to participate in Torah classes, and how much he himself, how much he himself would toil. And close his book in order to give Torah classes, to spread Torah and reverence.
