hi everyone welcome to another edition of the swm chatter podcast on this episode of the podcast I'm going to be joined by Professor Reena andlau who is the associate professor of history and religious studies at Oregon State University and the topic of this episode will be mainly focus on her book that came out a few years ago called Colonial Justice and the Jews of Venetian creit um published by Penn University press and cre we'll get to his an island Greek island with the city of Candia and we'll focus on that so thank you very much Professor lar for joining me thanks so Professor lar for joining me thanks so much for having me so let's uh start off tell the listeners a little bit about yourself and your background sure so uh as you said I teach at Oregon State University and that's in Corvalis Oregon a beautiful town with a surprising and lovely Jewish Community um and before this I did my PhD at Harvard but a lot of times people ask me why did you become a medievalist um and here I need to point to my Jewish Day School education um and the fact that when we education um and the fact that when we start to learn uh you know we we start to learn in kumash classes about Rashi or about even Ezra and we use the present tense we say you know Rashi says this or izra says this and I got to high school and uh suddenly I learned that these people lived at a particular time most of these commentators lived during the Middle Ages I got really interested in this thing the Middle Ages and thinking how did the the places and the times that these people lived affect how they read Torah and that was one of the reasons that I got into studying the
