Rambam Laws of the Pains of Marriage Chapter Two Halacha 1 Our Rabbi Rambam writes: His father's wife, his son's wife, his brother's wife, and his father's brother's wife, the four of them are multiplied by him forever, whether from the engagement or from the marriage, whether during their husband's lifetime or after their husband's death, except for his brother's wife who did not leave a son, and if the husband of one of them is alive, he is obligated to pay two, because of the remnant of flesh and because of the wife of another man. After all, the two torments come as one. Here, Rambam continues to detail for us the torments of adultery that are inflicted on a person and the divisions between them. So here in this Halacha, in the first Halacha of the second chapter, there is the ruling of five wives who are forbidden in any way. What does it mean to be forbidden anyway? This means that a person is forbidden, as we have learned, whether there was a divorce or not, and so on. What are the five wives? So before I read the halacha again, let's summarize: there is his father's wife. His father's wife. The meaning is that even if there is his father's wife. His father's wife. The meaning is that even if it's not his mother, his father went and married Meshi, his son's wife. The meaning is that his son married some woman, meaning his daughter-in-law, his brother's wife , his father's brother's wife, which is actually the wife of his father's brother, meaning his uncle's wife.
