My very dear friends, we are in Parashat Ki Teitzei 5784. My friends, I must tell you a terrible story that happened several decades ago in Jerusalem, close to us, and it sheds light on the understandings we must have regarding marriage or divorce. People do not belong to people. A wife does not belong to her husband, a husband does not belong to his wife. And it is Hakadosh Baruch Hu who decides everything, who decides who marries whom and who decides who must separate from whom. And this is the reason why we have very clear procedures. If it only depended on us, we would marry in a very simple way. It would be a tacit agreement. Yes. And then perhaps even if we had to separate , a tacit divorce would be enough. We cannot simply be in perfect agreement to divorce as it is written in the parasha. Katav la sefer keritut. He must write her a bill of divorce. It is a heavy procedure to properly release the bonds that were ultimately bound by Hashem Himself. We cannot do it through an amiable agreement. And to illustrate this point , I would like to tell you a story that happened in the Old City of Jerusalem. So much so that when a problem arose in the understanding of the Torah, his comrades could find him having spent an
