Good evening. We continue with commandments and virtues. The Book of Exodus, Chapter 23, Parashat Mishpatim, a new chapter. Until now there was a lot of money law, now a little bit of judge law and other very, very practical things for each of us. The verse says, Chapter 23, Verse 1: "You shall not be afraid there now, not to hear a word of his doings. Do not lift up your hand with a wicked man to be a witness of violence." What does it mean, "You shall not be afraid there now?" wicked man to be a witness of violence." What does it mean, "You shall not be afraid there now?" From this halacha, from these words, the sages learned several things. The principle of all of them is that a person is forbidden to hear slander about another. Not only not to speak slander, but also not to hear evil slander. And when a person hears slander, he begins to believe it, and therefore it is forbidden to believe slander, as it is written in the verse: "The first righteous man in his first enemy who comes to tell you something is already a believer. The second must prove that it is something is already a believer. The second must prove that it is not true, and it is the wisdom of life not to believe what is heard. So let's see what we learn, full of fear there." Now, the first law says, "The Book of Mitzvot helps the dayanim not to hear one of the litigants who is not in the presence of his fellow litigants." The dayanim is forbidden to hear one side without hearing the other side. Sometimes people come to the dayanim, "You heard he was like this, and he was like that, and you hear and do and say what the law is."
