for giving me the privilege to be able to address such a powerful evening dedicated to one of the great luminaries of our generation i also owe rabbi pence a personal debt of gratitude i want you to know that i think almost every single time that rabbi adin steins alts evan israel was making a trip from the holy land to the united states of america rabbi pinchas aloof would notify me and ask me if i would like to meet rabbi steinseltz if i would like to have a few minutes with him attend some of the events that he would be addressing and i'm very grateful to you for the unique opportunities and gifts that you have given me during those extraordinary visits to be together with this great mind and soul and heart in our generation everybody who knew rabbi steinseltz knows that he was a very honest person he loathed what we call in talmudic language khanifa flattery he did not flatter people he did not flatter audiences and the more important and distinguished affluent and wealthy you thought you were the less he would flatter you generally the custom in america i don't know if they tell you rabbi al-lush is people live on flattery the pasuk says but in some places people live with flattery that's what they're oxygen they flatter others and they want others to flatter them that's just the way it is shmar leaves merlot i scratch your back and you'll scratch
