The shiur in English

The Yanuka’s own words in this shiur, translated into English by Lehallel · 1,668 words · 8:58. Press a time to hear it said.

0:18 There are 117 verses, corresponding to the 117 hours in the week. Therefore we say Shir HaShirim on Friday night, to cancel the time of the judgment of the wicked in Gehinnom. So we say 'His hands are rods of gold,' and then we do the washing of the hands and all those things. So that one who is engaged in purity sees the judgment that Hashem, blessed be He, ruled upon this person.

0:44 So you see from this that one who truly sees the purpose is the one who is present in this hour, who simply sees the judgment, what was decreed upon this person. So he sees the verdict of the Heavenly court. He sees it before his eyes. But it is very painful, because it is also a very great responsibility. I say, he places faces before me, that I should pray.

1:09 It is a very, very hard thing... to hear this and to see, I really... it takes great, great strength. May your honor pray for me, that I should have much... - That Hashem should give you great strength, with Hashem's help, a complete healing, with Hashem's help. - Amen, amen. May we merit to see his light and his splendor, with Hashem's help, always. I am dust and ashes, I am worth nothing. We are only in awe down below, seeing the Rav's lessons.

1:35 These are things that... I told the avreichim, these are things that cannot be... Just now I spoke with my father on the phone. I said to him, Father, I am with the Yanuka, did you hear? He says to me, yes, you once told me. I said to him, Father, these are things that I cannot... This cannot be understood with simple intellect. There is something here that the Jewish people truly merit in this period, something enormous, enormous and awesome. We want the Rav to bless us, the avreichim, that all of them should succeed, with Hashem's help, in everything...

2:02 If you have such a Rav, and you merit to cling to him, in his light - you are fortunate. This... there is nothing greater than this. Certainly the Shechinah rests among you. And may you have much blessing, and may you have much siyata d'Shmaya. And whatever he tells you, do. In all that you turn, you will be wise, you will succeed, amen.

2:26 May you have much blessing. And certainly you are a kollel, the seed that Hashem blessed, who are truly... holy and pure. May we merit to already bring out many avreichim who will be dayanim... May his honor succeed - not because of me, learning avreichim, I am nothing, I only sit there. Avreichim who truly succeed, rising higher and higher in Torah and fear of Heaven, who strive to instill fear of Heaven. What a merit. May you continue to magnify the Torah and make it glorious, amen, and to give Hashem, blessed be He, nachas ruach, amen, and to contemplate the greatness of Hashem, blessed be He, this is the most important.

2:56 You know, there was the Rogatchover, may his merit shield us. They say that once they came to him. He would administer, each time, exams for the rabbinate. He would examine, and no one managed to pass with him, and he had to examine in order to give the ordination. And everyone who went in simply came out without his handwriting. So one time someone came, and everyone was truly amazed, and...

3:23 and he came out with the Rogatchover's handwriting and a signed document of endorsement on him. So everyone was amazed and immediately ran to him. So they began to ask him many questions, and he did not know how to answer anything. This is also in the Yerushalmi, chapter 2, halachah 4, in Berachos. This is the story about the Rogatchover, not about Rabbi... it is Rabbi Levi bar Sisi, whom the Holy One, blessed be He, loved. But he asked the Rogatchover, why did you give him an endorsement? After all, he knows nothing.

3:48 So the Rogatchover said to them: "He told me, 'If I do not know, I will come and ask you, and if I do not know, I will open books.' But all those whom I asked the question, they told me, they began to answer me all kinds of other answers instead of telling me that we will check and study and think. One must also know that sometimes the answer is that one needs to check and study and think. And because of that he received the letter from me, and only to him did he give this letter."

4:15 That is, one must know that greatness is to think, to study and to check, and this one received an endorsement from the Rogatchover, and only to him did he give this ordination. Who was the Rogatchover? The Rogatchover would go and learn Torah even on Tishah B'Av, and he said that he would give an accounting for it. And in the cemetery he would also learn. He said, "If in their lifetimes they know nothing, all the more so in their death."

4:40 That is how he said about him, Rabbi Yosef Rozin, may his merit shield us. Once they came to him at Mincha and Maariv, they came to him between Mincha and Maariv, and wanted him to say a word of Torah. So he opened a book of Tehillim and began to read. He said to them: "I am an ignoramus, I know nothing." This is the Rogatchover. He had only a simple library, he had Torah, Prophets, Writings, the Bavli and Yerushalmi and Rambam, this is what he would learn.

5:06 He would cover the commentaries on the Yerushalmi. He said that none of them got it right. That is how he was... he disagreed with them a lot. He was forceful, no? Yes, he was very forceful. This is the Rogatchover, but I see that you go in his path. I see the humble approach, the way of studying and thinking like this...

5:32 May the Rav bless us that we should be like this, with Hashem's help. I bless that the Holy One, blessed be He, should make your kollel succeed, grow and flourish without limit, amen, and that all that they learn there should have blessing and success from Heaven, and that all should be helpers and supporters of you, amen, and that you should succeed, and that there be blessing for all the helpers and supporters, amen. And may you have good influences, and may you remember all your learning - amen. And may you have blessing in learning, amen, and may you have siyata d'Shmaya in learning, amen, may you have success in learning, amen.

6:00 And all the influences and all the blessings stated in the Torah, and in Scripture, in the Mishnah, should rest upon you and upon your children and upon your children's children until the end of all generations, amen. Good influences and a good life and a good year, and a good inscription and sealing, amen. And may you be glad and joyful in all good and from all good, amen, in visible and revealed good, from joy and gladness of heart, amen. And you merited to have such a Rosh Kollel, you merited. Not everyone merits.

6:25 Not everyone can merit to sit in a kollel whose head is such a man. Not everyone merits this, that you merit to have such a head. So you can understand the Torah even more, because when one merits to unite the Jewish people like this, and to give Torah like this with a good eye and a generous eye to you, the avreichim, that he wants you to learn, and his whole heart is on you, certainly you will have help and support in learning, you will have more siyata d'Shmaya.

6:54 It is written in Rashi, Tractate Nedarim, page 49, side a, Rashi says there that Torah scholars, as a rule, have more of a tendency to become ill. They are sicker, they are weaker, because of the toil of the Torah, they toil in Torah, so they become weak, it is hard for them, they have much greater weakness. It is because of the toil of the Torah, because they toil in Torah. So you need to know to strengthen him, that he too, his honor, is a Torah scholar, who is so weary from Torah - strengthen him and encourage him, and appreciate that your kollel is so holy.

7:24 And this is the great merit too, that we do this for the sake of Heaven. So the Holy One, blessed be He, helps that also the place is 'one synagogue,' that in its merit it is also possible to bring the Redemption, amen. So you will succeed like this - there is more siyata d'Shmaya and holiness in the place, the more the head, with his good mind and a generous eye, wants them to learn like this... and so he raises them all, and sets up many students and dayanim and Torah scholars who will be able to issue rulings in Israel and to crown Hashem, blessed be He, in the world, and to give Hashem, blessed be He, nachas ruach, and you will have help and support, amen.

7:58 Amen. The Rav is here. May you have siyata d'Shmaya and a good life... - Oh, how is the Rav? How does the Rav feel? - Good to see you, does the Rav feel well? - Perfectly fine. - And how is our master the Rosh Yeshiva? - Fine, I told him about... I gave him...

8:25 - I will bring you the glosses of... - Thank you very much. - Give him my regards, and I would be happy if he would bless me for a good year. - Tell him that I would be happy if he would bless me for a good year. Raise up many students, amen.

What’s said in this shiur

The opening of this shiur, in The Yanuka — Rav Shlomo Yehuda’s own words — taken from the captions, so names and Hebrew terms may be approximate.

There are 117 verses that correspond to the 117 hours in the week. Therefore, Shir HaShirim is recited on Erev Shabbos in order to suspend the judgment of the wicked in gehinnom. And then they say, “His hands are rods of gold,” (Shir HaShirim 5:14) and perform the hand washing and all those things. So, the person who prepares a body for burial sees the verdict Hash-m decreed on the deceased. So we infer from here that the person who actually witnesses the final destination is the one who is present at this hour when he sees the verdict decreed on the deceased, he sees the heavenly court’s verdict, it’s visible before his eyes. But this [encountering people under divine judgment] is very painful because it is also a very big responsibility, when these individuals comes to me so I can pray for them it’s something very, very difficult… to hear and see [all they are going through], I really need a great amount of strength. May his honor pray for me that I may have much… May Hash-m grant you strength, and with G-d’s help may you have complete healing. May we merit seeing our illuminary and glory (the Rav) frequently, with G-d’s help. I am dust and ashes, I am not worth anything. We marvel at and look up to the Rav upon seeing his Torah lectures. I told the avreichim (full-time learners), these are things that cannot be… I just now spoke with my father on the phone I told him, “Father, I am at the Yanuka, have you heard [of him]?” He told me, “Yes, you once shared with me.” I told him, “Father, these are things that I cannot…” “It’s impossible to grasp with simple intellect” “There is something here that truly, the Jewish nation has merited”
